B. GRAMMAR
I. Compound sentences (Câu ghép)
- Câu ghép là câu chứa từ 2 mệnh đề độc lập trở lên, diễn tả các ý có tầm quan trọng ngang nhau. Hay nói
cách khác, câu ghép được thành lập bởi các câu đơn được nối với nhau bởi các liên từ.
- Trong cấu trúc câu này, các mệnh đề được nối với nhau bằng các liên từ “Conjuntions”
Các liên từ được dùng trong câu ghép là
F = for A = and N = nor B = but O = or Y = yet S = so
Cách ghi nhớ: FANBOYS

Jackson started performing with his older brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon in The Jackson 5

for Thriller showed him dancing like a zombie and other dancers around him were zombies as well.
“Thriller”, which includes famous songs like “Beat It” and “Billie Jean” has sold 110 million copies
worldwide. The popularity of these videos helped bring the television channel MTV to fame. Jackson wrote
other well-known songs such as “Bad”, “Black or White”, “Heal the World”, and “Earth Song”. Through

Hip-Hop Planet
Hip-hop started in New York in the 1970s but has become popular all over the world. Today, many
countries have their own local hip-hop scenes. Artists from different backgrounds rap about everything
from cars and designer clothes to social issues. Here are some examples.
Europe is home to 10-12 million Roma – a group of people often called “gypsies”. Many Roma are poor.
In some places, they also face discrimination. Now some Roma teenagers are using hip-hop to teach
tolerance. In the Czech Republic, Roma teens meet for a hip-hop class called “Rap for Peace Hip-Hop”.
Their instructor is Shameema Williams. She is a member of the all-female rap group Godessa, from South
Africa. In the lessons, the teens learn to write rap music and use it to teach others about Roma culture.
These teens, Williams believes, can use music to change their lives and other people’s attitudes.
Assane N’Diaye loves hip-hop music. He grew up in a small fishing village in Senegal. For a time, he
was popular as a DJ in clubs in Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. Today, N’Diaye lives in his village again.

Telephone Song
The first telephone song appeared in 1899 and was called Hello My Baby. In the song, a man phones his
girlfriend every morning to talk to her. But first he has to speak to the operator and he has to talk very
loudly because the line is so dad. Phone calls appeared in a lot of pop songs in the 20 th century, like Stevie
Wonder’s Just Called to Say I Love You in 1984. The famous American soul singer’s song was number one in
several countries, like the USA, Britan, Germany and Italy and won an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1985.
In the last few years, phone songs have been about mobile phone calls. The most famous is Lady Gaga’s

The boyfriend rings again and again but the woman doesn’t answer because she is dancing and having fun.
What will pop songs be about in the future? There will probably be more songs about social

Chau van singing was also called “Hat A Dao” or “Ca tru”. Originally, attractive young female singers
entertained men in a relaxed environment, sometimes serving drinks and snacks. Men might have visited a
“Hat A Dao” inn with friends to celebrate a successful business deal or the birth of a son.
Chau van singing flourished in the 15 th century in northern Viet Nam when it was popular with royal
palace and a favourite hobby of aristocrats and scholars. Later, it was performed in communal houses, inns,
and private homes, and gained its high popularity. These performances were mostly for men. When men
entered a Chau van inn, they purchased bamboo cards. In Chinese Vietnamese, “tru” means “card”, and
“ca” means “song” in Vietnamese, so the name Ca Tru means tally card songs. The tallies were given to the
