QUESTIONNAIRE ON EARTHQUAKE RESILIENT BUILDING IN INDONESIA

for an Architecture Master Thesis

By Julia Weißenbäck & Philipp Petschenig

Technical University Vienna in cooperation with Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta

About us :

We are two Master degree Architecture Students from Vienna, Austria. We studied for 6 months at Udayana University in Bali. This is where both of us fell in love with the
Indonesian country, its people and diverse culture. For the end of our studies we decided to come back to the country we both love to write our final thesis.

This master thesis will consist in research about eathquake resilient building construction in Indonesia, more precisely a comparison of the latest major earthquakes in
Java and Lombok. Past events and knowledge already gained by the local population are examined on site. Existing construction principles from traditional architecture
as well as innovative ideas should be identified. Measures taken by the local authorities to ensure earthquake-proof construction are analyzed and their effectiveness
assessed. A particular focus of the research is the choice of materials and the execution of the junctions as well as the positioning of the buildings. Every earthquake is
different, as are the initial situations. It is important to find out where there are parallels in the localities and how they differ.

PERSONAL OPINION , THE END :)

Do you want to tell us anything more about earthquake resilient building in Indonesia ? Or building in the tropics in general ? Do you think we forgot anything ?
We are here to learn from you, please let us know.

In indonesia people tent to build their houses based on the budget. Some people could only have houses from plywood and some of them could have high
technology houses built like lego. Not all locations in Indonesia are at risk of earthquakes. It would be great to have a earthquake proof house but not so
many people in Indonesia can build them with cheaper price so its back to the budget
