METATHESIS NEUTRALIZATION REACTION

(DOUBLE DISPLACEMENT REACTIONS)

AX + BY = AY + BX TYPES:
All neutralization reaction involving acids and ACID + BASE = SALT + WATER
bases are actually a metathesis reaction METAL OXIDE + ACID = SALT + WATER
NON-METAL OXIDE + BASE= SALT + WATER
Any carbonate, either in the solid state or AMMONIA + ACID = AMMONIUM SALT
aqueous solution, react with acid to form water,
carbon dioxide gas and salt.

COMBUSTION REACTION
Reaction of elements and compounds with
oxygen (+ O2)
= C+O2

C+O2 (limited)= CO
C+O2 (excess)=CO2
C2H4+O2(limited)= CO + H2O
C2H4 + O2(excess) = CO2+ H20

LIMITED- are reactants that is completely used

up
EXCESS- are reactants that are not completely
used up

REMEMBER
AQUEOUS(q)-An aqueous solution is water
that contains one or more dissolved
substance. The dissolved substances in an
aqueous solution may be solids, gases, or
other liquids.
COMBINATION REACTIONS
A+B=AB
Metal + Nonmetal= Binary compound (2 elements)
Nonmetal + Oxygen = Nonmetal oxide
Metal oxide + Water = Metal hydroxide (base)
Nonmetal oxide +H20 = oxyacid (acid)
Metal oxide + Non-metal oxide = salt
*OXYGEN-oxide
*WATER-hydroxide (OH)

DECOMPOSITION REACTIONS DISPLACEMENT REACTIONS

AB A+ B A + BY = AY + B
Hydrates salt + water More active metals can displace a less active
*HYDRATES- any compound containing H20 metal, while a less active one can’t displace the

(salts are made of a positive ion (from base) and
a negative ion (from an acid) There are also replacement reactions involving
IA bicarbonates Carbonates + H20 +CO2 non-metals. For example, for Halogen the series
IIA bicarbonates Metal oxide + H20 + CO2 would be fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine.
*BICARBONATES- a salt of carbonic acid (DECREASE)
containing the ion HCO3
