Department of Education Eyes Good Manner and Right Conduct Class

Shaping a child’s attitude starts at home. It has always been the parents’ duty to

teach their children to determine what is right and wrong. While children spend their

first few years at home, there will come a time when they have to go out and learn in

school.

That is why the Department of Education is eyeing the possibility of adding good

manners, right conduct and proper values classes to the curriculum of the schools in

the Philippines.

Parents have always valued a child’s numeracy and literacy skills. Good

education means that their children can memorize, read and write well. But according

to our Deped Secretay Leonor M. Briones lessons should be added I the first three

years of schooling. She also added that children should know how to say good morning,

how to deal with other childre.

Teaching the children does not stop when they start going to school. Most

certainty, it does not just start when they begin their schooling too. Parents should bear

in mind that they cannot leave it all to the teachers because their child spends more

time at home rather than in school.

Good manners are very important in our daily life. Importance of these in life is the

well-known facts. Good manner creates an effective interaction with friends as well as

make a good impression on a public platform. It helps us to be positive throughout the

day.

Good manners always give the opportunity for a new conversation with people and

hence the ultimate success in life. If someone talks to you badly, then still don’t talk him in

the same way. Always talk him in your own positive way of behaving to give him the

chance to change.

Good manners are vital to each and everyone in the society. These will definitely

help us for getting popularity and success in life because nobody likes mischief and

misbehaved person. Good manners are like a tonic to the people living in society.

People with polite and pleasant nature are always popular and respectable by a

large number of people. Obviously, such people are having magnetic influence over

others. Thus, we must practice and follow good manners in our life always.

PAIDEIA PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

For decades, educational philosophy serves to inspire and direct educational

planning, programs and process in any given setting. Paideia proposal is basically an
arrangement of liberal education for all the people. This was proposed that by
neglecting the student as individuals and their different home environments, education
should be provided equally to everyone.
Basic schooling must therefore be made available to all children. They must be
preparing for a lifelong process of learning. Learners may experience difficulty because
not all of them know the same topic. Not all of the children expected to acquire certain
knowledge and skills and to demonstrate reasonably high levels of achievement
students’ interest must be on the list because it requires on how they be able to

understand such topic. We should inculcate in our mind that everything should be learnt
but everyone has not the same mind and interest.
No one wanted to be left behind. Paideia educational philosophy has made their
necessary types of learning which is the deductive instruction (traditional lecturing)
coaching and Socratic seminar (extended discussion). The program may be applicable
to higher grades and not to grade I and kindergarten. This program may need to
reconstruct for the early education to cope up with the objectives. Objectives can be
applicable to leader. For instance, the Socratic seminar the only path to understand
basic ideas and values. It would vary depending on subject matter and participants.
One role of education is providing children with knowledge. Education allows
everyone to analyze what’s in front of them and even learn from their mistakes. We
cannot deny the fact the Paideia Educational Philosophy is good but there is instance
that the objectives are impossible to attain. Not all student learns in the same way.
They have differences in acquiring knowledge and understanding. It is not important to
be a learner than to be learners. It is not what you learn but how will you choose to live
your life every day. Education or educating children will not defend on the three ways
but how the teacher make herself to educate them. Remember that teacher has super
powers they can make think possible.
Education us an important issue in one’s life. It is the key to success in the future
and to have many opportunities in life. Children loves to learn from their own
experience. Yes, it based on the learning acquired in school to have their own diploma
but their own success will depend on what track they will be going to choose. Teachers
may not do the three-tiered objects, modes and methods of teaching as long as they

are doing their job well to educate the child at their best. School may offer every
student access to a rigorous education. Lastly, I disagree with the Paideia Educational
Philosophy from its major objectives to its design to current educational system, trends
and management.

REACTION PAPER ON THE INTRODUCTION OF PHILIPPINE EDUCATIONAL

SYSTEM

The education in the Philippines is historical in nature as part of colonialism.

United States shaded the almost half of our educational system, as an evidence in

relevance to the educational reforms is the K to 12 Curriculum.

The Philippine education system has evolved over hundreds of years of colonial

occupation, first by Spain and then by the US, through martial law and the people’s

power revolution that brought democracy to the sprawling archipelago. The education

sector’s development has mirrored the changes in the country’s administration. Today

the focus is on expanding access and ensuring more Filipinos receive a decent basic

education, as a means of reducing poverty and improving national competitiveness. The

World Bank notes that in other countries such initiatives have brought “large economic

benefits.” The K-12 reform was introduced in 2016 and funding was increased, easing

concerns that its implementation would be hindered by limited resources and winning

over new President Rodrigo Duterte, who was initially skeptical about the plan. 1

Reforms embrace change for the good for a house of improvement will never be

fulfilled. In observance of the decreasing literacy rate of the country ranging from 1990-

2013, Philippines has its major school reforms like Kindergarten Act of 2012 and

Enhanced Basic Education 2013 into Formal Education which extends 10-13 years. It is

due to the increasing drop-out rates which plagued the system for decades.

The transition period will end this School Year 2017-2018 which began in the

School Year 2012-2013. The cohort graduates will be the firsts to take the units in the

Senior High School level wherein the beginning were called as the K to 12 babies.

K to 12 program encompasses kindergarten, six (6) years of elementary

education and six (6) years of high school education, the latter divided into four (4)

years of Junior High School and two (2) years of Senior High School. The program aims

to decongest and enhance the curriculum to enable learners to acquire the basic

competencies needed by students to work, engage in entrepreneurship, or pursue

higher education.2

In cognizant to Republic Act No. 10533, the Enhanced Basic Education Act of

2013, it seeks to improve the basic education system of the Philippines by

strengthening its curriculum and lengthening the number of years of education from ten

to twelve years. The new curriculum, popularly known as the K to 12 program, is a

landmark reform that brings the basic education of the country on a par with

international standards. The history of the reform is revisited and its legal bases, main

features, relevant orders, and implications for higher education are discussed. Concerns

about its initial implementation are raised and a call for all stakeholders, particularly

teachers who are the principal agents of instruction, is made to make the reform work

for the benefit of the learners.3

‘Meeting National Needs’ that is one of the concern and need of the country,

more specifically the economic status – employment as an integral part of it. It is an

eye opener of the real world and its demand to be a functional individual right after the

K to 12 learner graduate. Entrepreneurial spirit as they shake their hands to welcome

the business and worldwide transactions; science and technology as to develop their

critical thinking and make them realize that discovery is borderless; sex education along

with awareness of the issues of an early pregnancy and illegal drugs; calamity

awareness and readiness.

The world is changing as the curriculum is. It is a must that curriculum jives on

the call of the demand of modernization and globalization for a meaningful outcome

that each one may serve his/her purpose not just merely focusing on the demand but

most likely to his/her interest. Curriculum shapes the future of the K to 12 learners.

However, after years of transition, there are pros and cons of implementation.

Nevertheless, as Mother Teresa of Calcutta India said that it is how you see darkness

through the light or light through the shadow, it’s a matter of perspective – have a

good one!

SUSPEND the implementation of K to 12

There was a stir in the media and in the tabloids with the entry of President Bongbong

Marcos and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte on the removal of the k to 12 curricula. With

the advent of the k to 12 curricula, many have joined and refused to do so because it is

a additional burden to parents. And there are also many studies resulted to the

decrease of quality of education. The number of illiterates is increasing and the

knowledge of children is declining, especially in English. The implementation of the new

curriculum needs to be re -studied and carefully planned. Many also say that the

mother tongue lowers the knowledge of children because it is used in all subjects that

should have put the mother tongue as a subject. We can't say that the curriculum is

good or bad because all curriculum is good because it only depends on the

implementation, whether the implementation is good and whether a country is good at

implementing the new curriculum. That is why our government should not be in a hurry

but study hard about what is good for the masses in our country so that we can provide

As this challenging academic term begins, and some students are learning
remotely, while others are heading back in person, we urge educators to pause and
reflect on what worked — and didn’t — during remote learning last spring. While we
eagerly await the moment when all schools can safely resume in person, we strongly
caution against reverting back to the “normal” way of doing things. “Normal” was not
working for so many students prior to COVID-19.

As the minutes spent per week in each class were reduced for many schools
during remote learning, teachers were forced to strip their lesson plans down to the
essential elements students should learn. While reducing content can feel
uncomfortable to teachers and can cause worry about how to get through the required
material, it can also provide an unexpected opportunity to focus on the enduring

understandings we want students to master. Students are more likely to learn and
retain skills and concepts when they are not overwhelmed by the load and pace of work
being assigned.

Shifting the focus from coverage to competency can provide both teachers
and students space in the day to engage more deeply in the learning process and build
more meaningful connections between concepts. When teachers prioritize transferable
skills, students practice applying what they have learned to novel situations and
ultimately build mastery.

Educators have an exciting opportunity now to redesign lessons and pare

learning goals down to those that are essential in each subject area. Even when
students face comprehensive end-of-year exams, for example, in advanced placement
courses, a deeper focus on key concepts and critical thinking skills, such as use of
evidence to back a claim, logical reasoning, and clear communication, may prove more
beneficial to students than covering in a more cursory way all of the possible content
that might show up on the test.

Before COVID-19, we regularly surveyed students about what, if anything,

caused them the most stress. The number one answer was usually “workload.” Many
students also reported that they perceived much of their homework to be busywork and
that it did not help them to learn the material. When teachers focus on what matters
most, they can reduce unhealthy workloads and can help students see the meaning
behind what they are learning each day.
