The word ‘Metaverse’ is made up of two words. ‘Meta,’ and ‘verse’.

‘Meta’ means beyond, and

‘verse’ from the word ‘universe.’ Beyond the Universe. Truly, this shows us the future of the
metaverse. 2 years ago, only lexicographers or science fiction geeks would’ve had an idea of what
the “metaverse” was. However, since a certain someone (that someone being mark Zuckerberg)
rebranded Facebook to meta, many of us who didn’t read science fiction, and just liked to Netflix
and chill all day have now come to know about the existence of metaverse. Now of course, most of
us have questions like, what is the metaverse or why is it so important? Questions like Rest assured;
all those questions will be answered in this podcast.

THE METAVERSE

Firstly, what is the metaverse? It is quite difficult to define the Metaverse, as (let’s admit it) it is
not yet fully formed, despite what some people may say. However, by combining a bit of history
and the different definitions already given, it is possible to find a description that can put
everyone in agreement.
The Metaverse is an immersive virtual world that combines virtual reality, augmented reality, and
holographic 3D avatars for social interaction. This immersive virtual environment will allow you to
relate with other users in a very realistic manner. 

This idea has existed for a while, with companies like Minecraft and Roblox creating virtual
environments more than a decade ago. Roblox’s platform allows users to create and trade various
digital assets. 

Some relevant examples of the metaverse include games like Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite, which
are 2D virtual worlds, and people currently access them using laptops, desktops, and smartphones.
Over the last two decades, large tech companies like Facebook, Microsoft, and Google transformed
the way we work, play, and socialize. Now, they are creating 3D virtual worlds that can be accessed
using virtual reality headsets. 

These virtual worlds will change the landscape of everything we know the internet to be today. Like
how you got to school; normally we’ll have to wake up, wear our uniforms and drag ourselves to the
bus stop. However, with this technology, we can log on to the metaverse and just start our class.
Chatting with friends, eating lunch, asking questions in class; all of this and more can be done in the
metaverse. No more dragging yourself to places or suffering through traffic. We can experience all of
this from the safety of our home; through the metaverse.

WHY DOES THE METAVERSE MATTER TO YOU?

Immersive augmented reality has the power to change the way we live our lives. Since the outbreak
of the covid-19 pandemic, most of our activities have moved online, and gradually, we are adapting
to a virtual world.  More people now hold meetings, job interviews, and conferences using video
conferencing apps like Zoom, Google meets, and the likes. 

With virtual reality, things are expected to change further. People will work, play games, exercise,
learn, shop, teach and interact with friends without even leaving the safety of their homes. Avatars
will make virtual interaction more realistic than video calls or video classes. The Oculus VR
headset from Facebook even mimics the facial expressions of the wearer in the virtual world. If
you’re frowning, the oculus detects it. You’re smiling, laughing, crying; ding ding! The oculus detects
it. the other people sitting next to you

As a result of lockdowns, many became lonely during the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. Most people
who lived alone craved human companionship. VR technology can help solve problems like this. 3D
virtual reality technology will help people bond with their loved ones even if they live thousands of
kilometres away.
