ACTIVITIES

USING THE DATA SET FOR ACTIVITIES, excel file: DATA SET(correlations), run
correlational analysis to answer the following research questions. Follow the format below
in answering.

1. Research Question: Is there a significant relationship between motivation and

boredom?

a. Null Hypothesis:There is no significant relationship between motivation and

boredom.

b. Alternative Hypothesis: There is a significant relationship between motivation and

boredom.

c. Results: (copy and paste the SPSS output)

d. Write the result in standard format.

Results: The Mean score in motivation of the 110 samples is 3.65 and the Standard Deviation is 0.81,
while the Mean score boredom is 3.74 and Standard Deviation is 0.86 . The correlation analysis shows
that the Pearson Correlation coefficient* between motivation and boredom is r(computed) = 0.01145 ,
and the r(tabulated) is 0.1946 (based on the table below TABLE B.7. Critical Values for Pearson’s
Correlation Coefficient the Degree of freedom or df is 110 – 2 =108, the nearest to 108 is 100, look n =
100 then = 0.05 the intersection of the two is r (tabular) = 0.1946). The correlation coefficient is almost
zero, a very week correlation coefficient. Since the r(computed) is less than the r(tabular) or r(com) =
0.01145 < r(tab) = 0.1946, we retain the null hypothesis stating that there is no significant relationship
between motivation and boredom. To determine whether the scores in Motivation are related to
boredom, correlation using Pearson r was computed. Results show that motivation is not related to
boredom. It indicates that differences in motivation scores are not related to differences in boredom
score.

2. Research Question: Is there a significant relationship between motivation, boredom,

Science grades, Math grades, and English grades and to students’ IQ?

a. Null Hypothesis: There is no significant relationship between motivation, boredom, Science

grades, Math grades, and English grades and to students’ IQ.

b. Alternative Hypothesis: There is a significant relationship between motivation, boredom,

Science grades, Math grades, and English grades and to students’ IQ.

Results: The correlation matrix shows that only English test is related to IQ scores(r = 0.677). The matrix

also shows the significant negative relationship between English and Science is ne (r = -0.21567)

indicating that students who scored high in Math scored low in Science. Likewise, test boredom is

negatively related to Science (r = -0.30336) indicating that students who reported higher boredom

scored lower in Science.
