ACTIVITY 1: EARTH’S SUBSYSTEMS

“Connect the Spheres: Earth’s Systems Interactions”

All Earth processes result from the flow of energy and the cycling of matter within and among
the planet's systems. This energy is derived from the sun and Earth's hot interior. The flowing energy
and cycling matter produce chemical and physical changes in Earth's materials and living organisms.

I. Learning Objectives:
In this activity, you will be able to create a concept map and use it to explain how the Earth's
subsystems are interconnected.

II. Materials:
Pen/Pencil Paper Camera/Mobile Phone with camera

III. Instruction:
1. Step outside of your house where you can observe the open space and the environment. Bring a
pen/pencil and paper, and jot down your observations by completing the following table. Please
provide a minimum of two (2) observations. [8 points]

2. From your list, select one organism that belongs to the biosphere and demonstrates its
interconnectedness with the other three subsystems (hydrosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere). Keep in
mind that the sequence can be rearranged to match your observation. [12 points]

3. Take picture of your selected organism. Print out an image of your chosen organism and affix it to
the corresponding part of Earth's system to which it belongs.
4. Create a concept map to illustrate how the organism you have chosen is interconnected with Earth's
subsystems. Concept maps are visual tools used to represent information, often in the form of charts,
graphic organizers, or flowcharts. You will be graded using the following rubric.

ORIGIN AND STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH

7. With your concept map above, explain how the organism you have chosen is interconnected with
Earth's subsystems. Limit your answer to five (5) sentences only. [8 points]
Humans are closely connected to Earth's subsystems in several simple ways: We rely on the land

need water from rivers, lakes, and underground (part of the hydrosphere) for drinking and

farming. Our water use and pollution affect these sources. We breathe the air (part of the

atmosphere) for survival. However, we produce pollution and gases that can harm the air quality
