SELF-LEARNING KIT

FOREWORD

The sudden occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic causes such a tremendous

change in our educational system this school year. It makes you and everyone
around shift from the ‘old normal’ to the ‘new normal’ ways in almost all
aspects of life. However, this doesn’t hinder the continuity of the teaching-
learning experience. Nothing and no one can stop teachers from providing and
equipping you with the skills you need, not even this worldwide outbreak.
I looked for the best sources and put their best words together in this module in
a manner that you, my dear learner, can independently and easily understand. I
hope that in this self- learning kit, you will enjoy doing the activities as well
take pleasure in discovering and learning different textual aids with help of your
new friends in the character of Lineah and Graffy.
By the way, when I crafted this kit, you were in my mind.

Hello, Lineah! I have heard you’re worried about how to
illustrate ideas from the reading assignment your teacher
gave you. I offer my help. I have this reference material
containing textual aids that will help you organize ideas from
any reading text. Let me read them to you. But you have to
do the tasks here and check your understanding of your
learning today. For sure you’ll enjoy as you do these
activities. What do you think?

Sounds interesting, Graffy! Okay, I’m in.

Ready with my pen and paper.

Isn’t it amazing! You don’t have to write those

lengthy words again and again for here are textual aids
that break down ideas in an easy way. And this time
please do the activities. In case you’ll be confused you
can always go back to the types of graphics and for
what purpose they serve. Let the fun begin!

Activity 1
Score: ______/ 9

Directions: Read each paragraph. A graphic organizer is used to show the

structure of the text. Fill in the missing boxes with the appropriate information.

1. Rembrandt is a famous artist known for his oil paintings. He was born in 1606. He
knew that he wanted to be a painter by 1620, when he was at college. Rembrandt was
ambitious. By 1625 he had opened his own art studio. He would go on to paint many
masterpieces.

2. Getting to the North Pole is not easy. The fastest way is by airplane. That will
only take you to Norway though. Then you need to take a boat. The boat will take
you to an island called Barneo, which is about 60 miles from the North Pole. Then
you can fly to the North Pole by helicopter. That's the fastest way to get to the
North Pole.

Wow, you did it Lineah! You

may now proceed to the next
task.

Activity 2
Score: _______/ 26

Directions: Read each paragraph below and fill in the graphic organizer for each.

1. There are strange dancing lights in the Arctic skies. Some call these the northern
lights. If you want to see the northern lights, the first thing that you have to do is
go out at night. You won't see them in the day. Next you have to get somewhere
high. A mountain top should work. Then you have to wait. If you get lucky and
your timing is right, you should see this stunning phenomenon. Good luck!

2. There are several characteristics which distinguish plants from animals. Green
plants are able to manufacture their own food from substances in the
environment. This process is known as photosynthesis. In contrast, animals,
including man, get their food either directly from plants or indirectly by eating
animals which have eaten plants. Plants are generally stationary. Animals, on the
other hand, can usually move about. In external appearance, plants are usually
green. They grow in a branching fashion at their extremities, and their growth
continues throughout their lives. Animals, however, are very diverse in their
external appearance. Their growth pattern is not limited to their extremities. It
is evenly distributed and only occurs in a definite time period. Therefore, the
differences between plants and animals is quite significant.

4. Andy Warhol made some outrageous art. He's the guy who painted the soup can
in 1962. Or maybe one of his friends painted it. It's hard to say. Another one of his
famous works is of Chinese leader, Mao Zedong. That really upset people. He painted
that in 1973. In 1984 he painted a picture of Prince for the movie Purple Rain. Most
people liked that one.

That was great! Now take this another

challenge. You still can do it. Way to go,
friend!
