TEST II

1. Yes, I strongly agree to the author’s point. Being a multi-lingual is an advantage because
it helps the economy, grants versatility on conversations, and improves our skill set.
First, it helps the economy by the fact that was mentioned in the essay wherein there is
an increase of Filipinos hired to teach English in ASEAN countries. The salary remitted by the
overseas teachers contributes to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a country, does with
higher GDP means that domestic firms can provide more jobs because of the increase in
spending capacity of the Filipinos.
Second, it grants us versatility on conversations. As far as the topic of globalization,
people with different culture and languages coexist in a community. With the variation of
people comes with variation of norms of people, being a multi-lingual not only teaches us a new
language but also gives us a hand in understanding other cultures point of view. Being multi
lingual lessens the chance of misunderstanding between a conversation and it also helps merge
with the exchange of topics without feeling awkwardness. In the case of seeing unusual
behaviors of the opposite speaker, a multi-lingual person accepts the facts that each people
have its own norms that is general from his culture or even unique to themselves.
Lastly, it improves our skill set. Based on the previous points, improved skill set means
more opportunities, such as jobs, but aside from knowing and understanding multiple languages
and cultures, there still more skills provided by being a multilingual. In learning a language, we
do not only learn it as vocabulary and grammar, but we learn it by discipline. As mentioned in
the essay that in order to master a second and third language we should master our first
language, this involves the discipline necessary for us to move forward not only in learning
languages but a key component on living our lives. Also, according to some studies it sharpens
our mind, sharpens our memory, and improves our ability to multi task.
With all the point discussed I could not see any point of disadvantage of being a multi-
lingual.

2. Yes, they did a splendid job in explaining the points fully and without losing its reader’s interest,
with the use of specific strategies as follows:
a. Highlighting the topics
 This helped because the reader was given a foresight of what he/she was about
to read in hat section thus it is easier to infer on what the author wants us to
understand.
b. Usage of connective adverbs
 The usage of “first, second, and third” helps the readers connect the topis to
each other, given them a clearer view of the thought sequence.
c. Using his own experience
 Relating himself into the topics by mentioning quotes from people he knows
and based on his experience. This gives the reader’s a glimpse of the story in his
own perspective; this not only provided more knowledge but also help them
feel united in the flow of the essay.
d. Usage of creative word
 This includes usage of idioms (bat an eyelash), creative phrases (sing hallelujah),
and usage of uncommon word(chauvinism). I personally liked this part because
it made the text easier and interesting to read. As writers, it is important to not
only consider the amount and quality of information we use, we need to
consider the interest of our reader because what’s the purpose of quality when
no one use it.

Lastly, the most Important point,

e. The ‘why’ questions

 This is the core strategy used in the text. This technique wherein the author
showed the phenomena and explained its WHY’S. This is the building block of
the information relay that the author wants to happen. Explaining the reasons
of a situation provides readers a better understanding of the bigger picture.
With this the readers are better educated andss could also formulate their own
speculations, which might even arrive differently to that of the author’s.

Scanning through these strategies will be beneficial for further essay/article writings that we will
do in the future.
