CHERILYN UNGAB ACOG BSED MATHEMATICS 3 -- 1

M118 (Assessment)

Choose two (2) guiding principles and elaborate each as to its importance and as to how it
is applied in the classroom. Cite relevant best practices of your mathematics teacher
before.

1. Principle 1: Mathematical competence goes beyond the ability to compute and perform
algorithms and mathematical procedures.
Mathematical skill extends beyond the capacity to conduct calculations and algorithms. It
entails a more in-depth comprehension of mathematical principles, the ability to apply these
concepts in real-world circumstances, and the ability to think critically and creatively in
mathematical contexts.

Best Practices:
When I was in third grade, my math instructor would constantly spend time after lunch
teaching us how to solve problems and telling us how important it is to understand mathematics in
life. She also highlighted the significance of understanding the "why" behind mathematical
operations rather than just the "how," which helped me build a solid mathematical foundation that
has been useful throughout my academic and career journey.

2. Principle 3: Mathematics is best learned when students are actively engaged.

Engagement is an essential component of good mathematics teaching. Students are more
likely to acquire and retain mathematical concepts, develop problem-solving skills, and develop a
favorable attitude toward mathematics when they are actively engaged in the learning process. It
also improves comprehension, critical thinking, motivation, retention, and communication abilities.
Effective mathematics teachers use a variety of strategies, such as hands-on activities, collaborative
learning, real-world applications, technology integration, and thoughtful questioning, to keep
students engaged and develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

Best Practices:
My senior high general mathematics instructor always opens his class with a rousing and
educational game to lift our spirits in the morning before we begin to listen to his lecture. He also
occasionally allowed us to see motivational movies from mathematicians to encourage us to keep
studying. My teacher never shows up to class in a bad attitude.
