DISCUSSION

Most of the primary products do not have a market until they are transformed into value added
products. From the examples above in the table honey is considered the major beekeeping product and
propolis is less known. Through the increasing knowledge of beekeeping products many value added
products are made as people are now aware of the benefits the beekeeping products have. From the
table it shows that South Africa has made use of honey to its highest level in their value added product.
It has recognized the benefits of honey to the lives of people and improving its products. Some of the
benefits are its nutritional benefits in such a way that it helps in physical performance and help in
resistance to fatigue, it helps to improve food assimilation and it’s useful to the chronic and things like
constipation. It also benefit the skin and wound healing. The propolis which is less known is also one of
the product in beekeeping which ids added to certain value added products like toothpaste, propolis
tablets, propolis syrups and shampoos. All in all honey is the most important and well known product of
beekeeping in regard to food or health, there are no synthetic substances which substitute for the wide
variety of characteristics of honey.
