Chapter 1:
Overview of Metabolism and
Biological Energy Transformations
4
Metabolism
Metabolism:
Metabolic pathways
5
Metabolism
Purposes:
(1) obtain chemical energy by capturing solar energy or
degrading energy-rich nutrients from the environment;
(2) convert nutrient molecules into the cell’s own
characteristic molecules, including precursors of
macromolecules;
(3) polymerize monomeric precursors into
macromolecules: proteins, nucleic acids, and
polysaccharides;
(4) synthesize and degrade biomolecules required for
specialized cellular functions, such as membrane lipids,
intracellular messengers, and pigments.

16
During metabolic energy transductions, the
randomness of the system plus
surroundings (expressed quantitatively as
entropy) increases as the potential energy
of complex nutrient molecules decreases.
(a)Living organisms extract energy from
their surroundings;
(b)convert some of it into useful forms of
energy to produce work;
(c)return some energy to the surroundings
as heat; and
(d)release end-product molecules that are
less well organized than the starting
fuel, increasing the entropy of the
universe.
One effect of all these transformations is
(e) increased order (decreased
randomness) in the system in the form of
complex macromolecules.

Năng lượng sinh học
Sự thay đổi năng lượng tự do (The free-energy change, G):
A+BC+D
ΔG = Gfinal – Ginitial
G (J/mol): sự thay đổi NL tự do của pứ trong điều kiện nhiệt
độ và áp suất không đổi
• G < 0:
