This document discusses intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. It defines motivation as the internal and external forces that direct behavior toward a goal. Intrinsic motivation arises from internal satisfaction in an activity itself, like exercising for stress relief. Extrinsic motivation comes from external factors and rewards, like working for money. While extrinsic rewards can motivate behavior, intrinsic motivation from inherent enjoyment tends to produce better long-term outcomes. The document provides examples of different types of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and how they relate to athlete motivation in sports.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation
What is Motivation? Motivation is a need or desire that energizes behavior and directs it toward a goal. It is what either starts or stops behavior. It is the internal and external forces that drive our thoughts, moods, and behaviors. What motivates you? types of Motivation Extrinsic Motivation: type of motivation in which a person performs an action because it leads to an outcome that is separate from or external to the person. Example: Going to work for money. Intrinsic Motivation: type of motivation in which a person performs an action because the act itself is rewarding or satisfying in some internal manner. Example: participating in a game because you enjoy it. What Is Intrinsic Motivation? Intrinsic motivation is the type of motivation that arises from internal factors. It involves performing a task because it is fun or engaging. In intrinsic motivation, we do a task because of its inherent satisfaction regardless of what consequences it may have. When you're intrinsically motivated, your behavior is motivated by your internal desire to do something for its own sake. Examples of intrinsic motivation could include: -Reading a book because you enjoy the storytelling -Exercising because you want to relieve stress -Cleaning your home because it helps you feel organized What Is Extrinsic Motivation? When you're extrinsically motivated, your behavior is motivated by an external factor pushing you to do something in hopes of earning a reward or avoiding a less-than-positive outcome. Types of Extrinsic Motivation Reward-Based Motivation: describes motivation resulting from external rewards, tangible or abstract.

Intrinsic versus Extrinsic Motivation
Reeve (2000) made a distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The former means a desire to perform a behavior for its own sake and to be effective while the latter states a desire to perform a behavior due to promised rewards. Both extrinsic or intrinsic motivation produces the best outcome depending on the goal. Athletes play sport games because of the enjoyment and satisfaction they get out of the sport they are engaged in. Because athletes feel that they are the cause of their involvement as well as their performance outcomes in a sport activity, they are more intrinsically motivated. On the other hand, athletes playing sport games to win a league trophy or medal. Because athletes consider the determinants of their sport involvement to be external like seeking rewards, they are more extrinsically motivated.
