Method Statement for Excavation Work Date: 10.03.2020

1. PURPOSE & SCOPE: - The purpose of this method of statement is to provide a


documented procedure for all activities related to Excavation and will cover the excavation
activities at all project sites.

2. DEFINITION & ABBREVIATION


Benchmark/Reference point: -A surveyor's mark made on a stationary object of previously
determined position and elevation and used as a reference point in observations and
surveys.
IFC: - Issued for construction drawings
ITP: - Inspection test plan
CAR: - Corrective action request
NSL: - Natural surface level
PTS: - Project technical specification

4. RESPONSIBILITY:
Project/Construction Manager

Project/Construction Manager will be responsible:


➢ Overall implementation and monitoring of all the activities
in the method of statement of excavation works.

Site Manager
Site Manager will be responsible:
➢ Over-all direction
➢ Monitoring

➢ Coordination
➢ Control of all the constructions activities related to the excavation works.

Site Engineer

Site Manager will be responsible


➢ Directly involved in the planning and execution of the activities
involved in the excavation.
➢ Preparation of excavation plan,
➢ Safety action plan and safe work plan
➢ Application for works permits if required prior to
commence of any excavation.

QA/QC Engineer

QA/QC Engineer will be responsible:


➢ Monitoring tests to be carried out as per the approved ITP.
➢ Coordinating with the independent testing laboratory for the testing.
➢ Check excavation work as per approved ITP & IFC drawing

Foremen
Foremen will be responsible:
➢ Direct execution of works involves in the excavation according to the plan.
➢ Directly control and give instruction to the working personnel.
➢ Ensure that works are performed with proper tools/equipment, PPE’s and good
housekeeping around the working area.

HSE engineer/Supervisor
Safety engineer / Supervisor will be responsible:
➢ Review prior to the start of the work Safe Work Plan and work permit,
➢ If required a submittal to client/customer that must be implemented and
observed during the steel rebar/reinforcement works.

5. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTS:


➢ Backhoe (power excavator),
➢ Pay load,
➢ Dump truck,
➢ Water truck,
➢ Survey equipment,
➢ Drill machine,
➢ Explosives & detonator (for hard rock excavation)
➢ Dozer with ripper,
➢ Front end loader,
➢ Wheelbarrow, shovel.

6. PROCEDURE:
➢ Survey the area and mark the excavation layout and slope cut stakes as per
excavation plan and drawing issued for the construction. Allowance should be
provided to have enough working space between the foundation to be constructed
and the edge of the bottom of the excavation for the personnel, forms, bracing, and
supports to be installed. All dimensions should be taken from the
Benchmark/reference point of the particular site.

➢ Inspection test plan (ITP) specific to project requirements shall be made and
relevant inspection activities shall be recorded either on the company formats or
those supplied by Customer.
➢ The ground level and depth of excavation shall be determine..
➢ Submit request for joint inspection of N.S.L and layout of area to client/consultant.
➢ Ensure the safety requirement as per health and safety plan.
➢ Excavation/Trenching over 1.2M deep shall be provided with sides sloped back to
the natural repose of the soil to avoid creation of caving. Sides which cannot be
sloped to the natural repose because of adjacent structures or ground condition
shall be shored adequately to resist earth movement and to protect workers.

➢ The excavated areas shall be isolated with the other working areas.

➢ All excavated material on sides of trenches shall be disposed of to the designated


barrow areas.

➢ Check the dimensions/levels of excavations as per drawings to avoid over cutting,


as work proceeds.

➢ Dress/compact the bottom of excavation as per requirement & specifications if


required.

➢ Submit request for final checking/approval by Customer/Consultant as required.

➢ In case of non-conformity at any stage of inspection the segregation shall be


covered by method statement and Corrective Action Request (CAR) shall be raised
as per client/customer laid down procedure
