1 Purpose

The Method Statement is to illustrate and outline sequence of the Construction of Working Bored
Piles. The purpose of this method statement is to give a general guideline for the Construction of
Bored Pile. Details of the procedures contained herein may be modified based on actual ground
conditions and site requirements. The methodology also emphasizes on the aspects of meeting
quality, environment, and safety requirements.

2 SCOPE

The scope of this methodology covering the Construction of Working Bored Pile for CUB, FAB, and
L-Shape retaining wall along site perimeter.

4 RESPONSIBILITIES

 Project Manager (PM)

• Approve the customized version, of this procedure, for use on the project.
• Ensure implementation of this procedure and provide necessary resources.
 Construction Manager (CM)

• Project Party responsible for the customization for use of this procedure in accordance with
the project requirements.
• Shall insure that all method statements issued on the project follow the standard guidelines
and templates included in this procedure.
 QA/QC Manager

• Responsible for the entire Project Quality Management System.


• Ensure that all Company Standard Quality Requirements related to this procedure are
implemented.
• Participates in the preparation of the Quality Control section and the Inspection and Test
Plan for all Construction Method Statements issued on the project.
• Responsible for monitoring the effective implementation of project method statement and
the relevant Inspection and Test Plan during the execution of the construction work.

 Safety Manager

• Participates in the preparation of the HSE section for all Construction Method Statements
issued on the project.
• Responsible for monitoring the effective implementation of the HSE requirements during
the execution of the construction works.

 QA/QC Engineer

• The QA/QC Engineer is a key member of the Project QA/QC Team, responsible for
conducting all Project Quality Assurance activities.
• He will assist the PQM in the performance of all Quality Assurance, Appraisal, and
Prevention activities (Project Audits, Trainings, Reporting, updating the QMS
Documentation)
 QC Inspector

• QC Inspector is a key member of the QA/QC Team, responsible for all Inspection and
Testing activities related to construction activities.

the successful execution of the related construction activity.

5 WORK ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS

5.3 Material and Testing

Construction materials and testing are as follow.

5.3.1 Concrete

Concrete specifications
 The requirement for water / cement ratio shall be meeting minimum of engineer’s
specification 0.4 and not in event greater than 0.5.
 The concrete grade G40 Tremie 2 shall be used for piles type as shown in typical details of
bored piles. Slump will be in the range of 175 to 225mm.
 Slump tests will be taken for every truck load of concrete.

Concrete Cube Tests shall be as follow.


Trial Mix 7days (3 cubes)
14days (3 cubes)
Time of Crushing 28days (3 cubes)
Concrete delivered to 7days (3 cubes)
site (every 50m3) 28days (3 cubes)
Number of cubes reserved for further testing 3 cubes

5.3.2 Steel Reinforcement

The minimum yield stress of steel reinforcement shall be in accordance with the following.

 High tensile type 2 deformed bars = 500 N/mm2.

 Mild Steel round bars = 250 N/mm2.

Unless otherwise indicated on drawing, the lapping length of steel bars shall be at least 40 times
the diameter of the smaller steel bar.

Testing: -

 Tensile test

 Bend test

 Re-bend test

1 sample of 3 test pieces per size per consignment for each batch.

5.3.3 Steel Casing

Temporary steel casings shall confirm to the shape of the pile and dimensions indicated on the
drawings and shall be sufficient strength to maintain shape and location during boring and
placement of concrete.

5.3.4 Slurry

Drilling fluid will be supplied from the site plant for the construction of bored piles.

5.4 Site Preparation

 Setting up of slurry plant is required before commencement of pile drilling

 Platform for pile drilling shall be well established to capacity if drilling plant loading.

 Mobilisation of plants, equipment, tools, and materials shall be planned with proper site
access and space.

 Outside steel fabrication yard shall be allocated in appropriate size and locations.

6 General working practices

6.1 Working platform

Working platforms provided must be sufficiently large and adequate for the rig to move and work.
The platform will be visually inspected on daily basis to ensure that the surface is adequate to place
the rig. Action will be taken to maintain its integrity by site superintendent and rig operator.

6.2 Storage of materials

A storage area will be created to receive the steel deliveries, temporary casing,
bentonite/polymer/water and scrap bin. Its location may change according to the progress of the
piling works.

6.3 Rig inspections

The site equipment, particularly pile installation rig, will be inspected and kept in a safe and
satisfactory condition to carry out the works. The mechanic superintendent is responsible for
ensuring the equipment is in good working order.

6.4 Training to workers

Before commencement of work, a Pre-task launching meeting will be held by the safety supervisor
and construction manager to remind all key personnel on site regarding the safe working
procedures.

Pre-start briefing to workers shall be held every morning by the safety supervisor and site
supervisor to remind the safety risks relating to the works and to prevent any incident and accident
occur.

6.5 Disposal of Drilling Return and Overcast Concrete

Drilling return and overcast concrete may be temporarily store in a spoil pit on site and transport
directly away after excavation.

7 Working Bored Piles Installation Procedure

The general procedure of pile installation is described as below:

7.1 Setting Out


 The surveyor will peg the position (n&s coordinates) of every pile prior to the
commencement of drilling operation.

 The competent supervisor will offset the position of pile to x and y direction with adequate
distance.

 Level the platform for the boring rig by placing steel plates.

 Check the verticality of the kelly bar of the boring rig by banksman prior to commencement
of boring.

 Position the boring rig at the designated location to commence boring works.

 As-Built survey will be provided before and after drilling in order check the correct casing
position. The as-built coordinates will capture in pile setting out record.

 According to the specifications, single piles shall not deviate more than 75mm from the
designed position at cut off level.

 As-Built survey of pile position and pile top level will be carried out after the construction of
working bored piles.

7.2 Casing Installation


 To carry out the excavation works for bored piles, a temporary steel casing shall be
installed.

 The insertion of the temporary casing is to ensure the loose and soft soil at ground level
does not erode and collapse into the borehole, thus interfere with the boring process later.

 Installation of temporary casing will be carried out with turntable or placed directly using
vibro hammer & service crane.

 During casing installation, checks are made to correct positioning and verticality. the
necessary adjustment shall be made by extracting and re-driving the casing until the
deviation is within tolerance.

 The surveyor shall verify the position of the steel casing through a series of verticality
checks. the supervisor shall employ the plumb-line method or spirit level to measure steel
casing’s verticality, project downward and verify the correct pile position.

 Tolerance allowance in the eccentricity of piles/steel casing to within ±75 mm at cut-off-level


in any direction on the plan, and verticality of 1/75.

 Casing top shall be left minimum 1000mm protruding above ground subject to site condition
and discretion.

7.3 Boring Of Working Piles

7.3.1 Drilling

 Excavation of soil inside the casing/bored holes will be carried out using the rotary kelly bar
and the auger or bucket.

 Pile lengths shall be as per construction drawings or as otherwise instructed.

 At the point of encountering the rock head level, for examples, where the soil drilling tools
are unable to penetrate the stratum any further, boring shall cease in order that the client’s
representative may verify the occurrence and confirm the rock socketing criteria.

 For drilling through rock, rock drilling tools shall be applied. this shall include rock auger,
core barrels and cross cutter.

 For rock sample collection, every 1m of drilling in rock PLT test to be carried out on site.
Every PLT sampling and testing on site to be witnessed by Resident Engineer.

7.3.2 Verticality Check

The borehole verticality check should be performed at the following stage:

 Check the casing position during and after placing the casing prior to boring work.

 Adjust the casing if verticality of casing is out of tolerance.

 Record the top level of temporary steel casing to enable measurement of pile depth.

 Vertical alignment of the piles shall not deviate at any point below the cut off level by more
than 1 in 75 from their true vertical position.

7.3.3 Bottom Cleaning

Upon reaching the final depth, loose materials and debris will be removed using cleaning bucket.
Cleaning bucket is a specially designed flat bottom bucket which will pick up all the loose materials
at the bottom of the bored hole.

On top of that, fluid circulation via tremie pipe before pouring of concrete in aid of clearing toe
sediments significantly.

Above process repeated to satisfactory toe cleanliness where sounding tape reaching toe of bore
hole without significant mud / sand friction. No Air Lifting & No Toe grouting required.

Inspection on final toe of pile and dipping to be done by Resident Engineer.

7.4 Placing of Reinforcement

 Prior placement of reinforcement cage, the cage shall be inspected on ground by client /
consultant representative in accordance to approved construction drawings.

 The cages are lifted from horizontal position to vertical position and lowered into the bored
hole one by one, where they are lapped and assembled.

 To ensure the specified 75mm concrete cover, spacers will be fixed to the reinforcement
cage at intervals not more than 6m with minimum 3 spacers at each level.

 All starter bars from bored piles shall be provided with minimum anchorage length of 40ɸ
from the cut-off level.

7.5 Placing of Concrete


 Tremie pipe set (min 203mm inside diameter) will be installed until the bottom of the hole.

 Vermiculate to be poured in the tremie pipe prior to concreting.

 Tremie II type of concrete shall be utilized to ensure self-consolidation and well


displacement of slurry during casting.

 When the level of concrete in the borehole rises, the tremie pipe column is shortened while
always ensuring a minimum 3m embedment into the fresh concrete.

 A pump is installed near the hole to recycle the drilling fluid to slurry plant as the concrete
level is going up.

 Overcasting of 1m required to ensure sound concrete at the Cut off level of pile.

7.6 Extraction of Casing

Temporary casing shall start extract once the placing of concrete is completed. After the temporary
casing has been extracted, the concrete shall be top-up into the bored hole when necessary.

8 Environmental Issues
The construction activities carried out shall be in adherence regulatory requirements and guidelines
as stipulated in the Environmental Quality Act, 1974.

Environmental Aspects, Impacts & Control Measures

The significant environmental impacts associated with the site activities shall be identified.

8.1 Air Quality and Noise Level

 All construction machineries shall be well maintained and in good working condition to
reduce emission of soot, smoke and noise.
 All liquids such as diesel, petrol, engine oil and other chemical should keep in deep tray.
Fuel and other construction chemical (Curing compound, Bonding agent, mould oil) should
keep in separate deep tray. In case of any oil spill, need to clean it and keep it separate
from other chemical. Sponge foam could be used for clean of spillage oil. Rubber hand
gloves and face mask should be used during cleaning the spillage oil.
 The following measures shall be implemented if the above mentioned (soot, smoke and
noise) is deteriorating:
- Increase maintenance frequency.
- Replace to better equipment if necessary.
- Switched-off equipment if not in used
- Supply workers on-site with proper PPE

8.2 Waste Management

 Scheduled waste from maintenance works of machineries, vehicles and tools will be placed
in designated area. Schedule wastes must be appropriately segregated stored and
disposed accordingly.
 Storage of the scheduled waste and maintenance of the vehicle must be away from the
nearest water bodies to avoid runoff of spillage if any.
 Scheduled Waste to be labelled, stored and disposed according to Department of
Environment's requirements Ensure that disposal of wastes undertaken by licensed
contractor.
 Food wastage and normal construction wastage should dump in separate bin. Cover
system Food Wastage bin is better to protect air pollution. Its need to clear every week once
or as per condition of the wastage.
 All food wastage firstly needs to put in shopping plastic bags or in the black colour garbage
bags. After that need to tie of garbage bag and dump into the Food Wastage bin.

8.3 Housekeeping

 Housekeeping is an essential part of safety for the daily routine. Every day before finishing
the work need housekeeping. All materials and hand tools should be cleaned and keep in
proper place.
 Housekeeping would include the following items:
- Maintain the access road to all working area and cleanliness to avoid any kind of
incident
- Park the machineries in designated area and in orderly manner.

9 QUALITY CONTROL
Project team will establish a Quality Control (QC) System that will be directed to monitor project
deliverables and ensure that all works and products are designed, manufactured, procured, and
built in compliance with the Project QMS requirement and the industry’s best practices.

The QC System will cover as a minimum: Works and materials Inspection and Testing, Samples,
Mock-ups Non-conformance Management, QC Reporting, and QC Records Management.

9.1 Project Quality Requirement

Subcontractor shall comply with all TIEM2 Project Quality requirements as detailed in the Project
Quality Plan (PQP).
Project Quality requirements shall cover all subcontractor/supplier scope of work, and will include
at minimum:
 Inspection, testing and validation requirements for supply and installation of work, materials
and equipment under the supplier/subcontractor scope of work,
 All validation certificates and technical data required to demonstrate compliance of work,
material and equipment to project technical requirements and relevant local and
international codes and standards,
 Make good of any defective work, material or equipment notified to the
subcontractor/supplier, either in Nonconformity Reports or through any formal or informal
manner to the satisfaction of Project QA/QC Manager,
 The subcontractor shall designate from his permanent site team a person who will act as
focal point with whom all site QA/QC matters will be addressed. The subcontractor’s
QA/QC person shall participate in the weekly QA/QC meetings during the subcontract
duration.

9.2 Quality Assurance

Prior to commencement of activities, all relevant staff shall be briefed on the requirements of
this Method Statement and associated Inspection and Test Plan (ITP to be done after
finalizing the design and to be submitted prior starting the works).

The QA/QC team’s responsibilities for concrete control will include:


 Preparation and scheduling of the testing requirements with the suppliers’ laboratory as required
and approved each inspection sheet or concrete docket

 Implementation of the Quality Plan for concreting to ensure accurate and adequate inspection
and testing of the materials arriving at the job site and directing corrective action as appropriate.

 Perform quality inspection to ensure compliance with contract specification and direct corrective
action upon any occurrence of non-compliance specification.

Inspection of bore piling:


 Pile excavations shall be inspected for rock and toe prior concreting works.
 In case of inspection from ground level – boring base to inspect from loose, disturbed removed
and the boring sides remain stable during concreting works. The verticality and position of the
boring shall be checked to ensure meet the specified tolerance.
 Check and inspect the reinforcement cage by Resident Engineer on site.
 Check of casting procedure during placement of concrete.

9.3 Quality Records


Site records shall be submitted during the progress of work:
• Daily Report

• Pile setting out report

• Piling driller report

• Reinforcement Cage installation record

• Pile concreting record

10 HEALTH AND SAFETY

10.1 Job Safety & Health Analysis


Job Safety & Health Analysis shall be carried on the project site. Cautions and awareness signs
shall be established at location of works. The hazards in a particular activity and the control
measures implemented shall be briefed to the workers during Safety Induction, Toolbox Meeting
and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) briefing. Safety precautions for stressing and grouting works are as
follows:

10.1.1 Job Safety & Health Analysis

 Nobody can stand under any suspended load during hoisting or shifting by the crane. Rigger
and banksman should control it.
 Housekeeping is required every day after work and before starting the work at least 15 to
20 minutes.
 No fighting will allow in whole compound area.
 Smoking should be in designated area.
 Gambling, Alcohol, Trash etc are not allowed in whole compound area.
 Body harness should be use during work above 2m height.
 Cotton hand gloves should be use during dry work, such as rebar work, formwork, material
shifting work etc. Rubber hand gloves should be use during concreting work, plastering work
etc.
 Dust mask should be use during hacking work, plywood cutting work by the circular saw and
during use broom.
 Face windshield should be use during use grinder, ear plug, and eye goggles should be use
during pipe or hollow cutter.
 Industrial cable will use for temporary electrical work purpose. Male and female plug will use
for connection to the tools.
 Need hard barricade around the excavation pit. GI pipe will use for hard barricade. TSJV will
provide required materials for barricade and Seal Consult will install and shift as per required
location.
 Temporary ladder (Steps) with handrail will use for access of excavation pit.

10.1.2 Information to Personnel

 All workers employed in the project site must have CIDB green card.
 All new workers and staff to attend the Safety Training or Safety Induction Course before
commencing works at site and attendances shall be recorded in an induction checklist.

 All the personnel will be briefed by the Safety Officer on the JSA of their job before any works
start.
 All site personnel shall wear proper Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) such as:
- Safety helmets, Safety vest, Safety boots and Wellington boots with steel toe.
- Safety harness with lanyard when working at height greater than 2 meters.
- Goggles and anti-vibration gloves for hacking and drilling activities.
 Monthly safety meetings shall be held with all the contractors' related-to-works.
 All workers to attend the daily Toolbox Meetings conducted by the Safety Officer held at site
and attendances shall be recorded.

10.1.3 Information Emergency Arrangements

 The Specific Emergency Response Plan (ERP) has been developed based on project
requirement.
 Flow chart for the potential emergency such as fire explosion, evacuation, structure collapse,
major injury or fatality from accidents, major chemical spillage, road accident / vehicle
breakdown, flooding and heavy machinery breakdown, protest/riot, food poisoning and
unstable person has been specified in Emergency Response Plan.
 The organization chart, list of emergency contact person and relevant authorities with their
contact numbers shall be posted on the Notice Board. These lists can be obtained from the
Emergency Response Plan. In the event of emergency, the Emergency Coordinator is
responsible for co-coordinating the response strategy and take immediate actions to reduce
or eliminate the threats of the emergency.

10.1.4 Risk Assessment


The occupational hazard, health and environmental risk assessment is attached in Appendix
2.
