Temporary steel casings shall confirm to the shape of the pile and dimensions indicated on the
drawings and shall be sufficient strength to maintain shape and location during boring and
placement of concrete.
5.3.4 Slurry
Drilling fluid will be supplied from the site plant for the construction of bored piles.
Platform for pile drilling shall be well established to capacity if drilling plant loading.
Mobilisation of plants, equipment, tools, and materials shall be planned with proper site
access and space.
Outside steel fabrication yard shall be allocated in appropriate size and locations.
Working platforms provided must be sufficiently large and adequate for the rig to move and work.
The platform will be visually inspected on daily basis to ensure that the surface is adequate to place
the rig. Action will be taken to maintain its integrity by site superintendent and rig operator.
A storage area will be created to receive the steel deliveries, temporary casing,
bentonite/polymer/water and scrap bin. Its location may change according to the progress of the
piling works.
The site equipment, particularly pile installation rig, will be inspected and kept in a safe and
satisfactory condition to carry out the works. The mechanic superintendent is responsible for
ensuring the equipment is in good working order.

Before commencement of work, a Pre-task launching meeting will be held by the safety supervisor
and construction manager to remind all key personnel on site regarding the safe working
procedures.
Pre-start briefing to workers shall be held every morning by the safety supervisor and site
supervisor to remind the safety risks relating to the works and to prevent any incident and accident
occur.
Drilling return and overcast concrete may be temporarily store in a spoil pit on site and transport
directly away after excavation.
The competent supervisor will offset the position of pile to x and y direction with adequate
distance.
Level the platform for the boring rig by placing steel plates.
Check the verticality of the kelly bar of the boring rig by banksman prior to commencement
of boring.
Position the boring rig at the designated location to commence boring works.
As-Built survey will be provided before and after drilling in order check the correct casing
position. The as-built coordinates will capture in pile setting out record.

According to the specifications, single piles shall not deviate more than 75mm from the
designed position at cut off level.
As-Built survey of pile position and pile top level will be carried out after the construction of
working bored piles.
The insertion of the temporary casing is to ensure the loose and soft soil at ground level
does not erode and collapse into the borehole, thus interfere with the boring process later.
Installation of temporary casing will be carried out with turntable or placed directly using
vibro hammer & service crane.
During casing installation, checks are made to correct positioning and verticality. the
necessary adjustment shall be made by extracting and re-driving the casing until the
deviation is within tolerance.
The surveyor shall verify the position of the steel casing through a series of verticality
checks. the supervisor shall employ the plumb-line method or spirit level to measure steel
casing’s verticality, project downward and verify the correct pile position.
Casing top shall be left minimum 1000mm protruding above ground subject to site condition
and discretion.

7.3.1 Drilling
Excavation of soil inside the casing/bored holes will be carried out using the rotary kelly bar
and the auger or bucket.
At the point of encountering the rock head level, for examples, where the soil drilling tools
are unable to penetrate the stratum any further, boring shall cease in order that the client’s
representative may verify the occurrence and confirm the rock socketing criteria.
For drilling through rock, rock drilling tools shall be applied. this shall include rock auger,
core barrels and cross cutter.
For rock sample collection, every 1m of drilling in rock PLT test to be carried out on site.
Every PLT sampling and testing on site to be witnessed by Resident Engineer.
Check the casing position during and after placing the casing prior to boring work.
Record the top level of temporary steel casing to enable measurement of pile depth.
Vertical alignment of the piles shall not deviate at any point below the cut off level by more
than 1 in 75 from their true vertical position.
Upon reaching the final depth, loose materials and debris will be removed using cleaning bucket.
Cleaning bucket is a specially designed flat bottom bucket which will pick up all the loose materials
at the bottom of the bored hole.
On top of that, fluid circulation via tremie pipe before pouring of concrete in aid of clearing toe
sediments significantly.

Above process repeated to satisfactory toe cleanliness where sounding tape reaching toe of bore
hole without significant mud / sand friction. No Air Lifting & No Toe grouting required.
Prior placement of reinforcement cage, the cage shall be inspected on ground by client /
consultant representative in accordance to approved construction drawings.
The cages are lifted from horizontal position to vertical position and lowered into the bored
hole one by one, where they are lapped and assembled.
To ensure the specified 75mm concrete cover, spacers will be fixed to the reinforcement
cage at intervals not more than 6m with minimum 3 spacers at each level.
All starter bars from bored piles shall be provided with minimum anchorage length of 40ɸ
from the cut-off level.
When the level of concrete in the borehole rises, the tremie pipe column is shortened while
always ensuring a minimum 3m embedment into the fresh concrete.
A pump is installed near the hole to recycle the drilling fluid to slurry plant as the concrete
level is going up.
Overcasting of 1m required to ensure sound concrete at the Cut off level of pile.
Temporary casing shall start extract once the placing of concrete is completed. After the temporary
casing has been extracted, the concrete shall be top-up into the bored hole when necessary.
8 Environmental Issues
The construction activities carried out shall be in adherence regulatory requirements and guidelines
as stipulated in the Environmental Quality Act, 1974.
The significant environmental impacts associated with the site activities shall be identified.
All construction machineries shall be well maintained and in good working condition to
reduce emission of soot, smoke and noise.
All liquids such as diesel, petrol, engine oil and other chemical should keep in deep tray.
Fuel and other construction chemical (Curing compound, Bonding agent, mould oil) should
keep in separate deep tray. In case of any oil spill, need to clean it and keep it separate
from other chemical. Sponge foam could be used for clean of spillage oil. Rubber hand
gloves and face mask should be used during cleaning the spillage oil.
The following measures shall be implemented if the above mentioned (soot, smoke and
noise) is deteriorating:
- Increase maintenance frequency.
- Replace to better equipment if necessary.
- Switched-off equipment if not in used
- Supply workers on-site with proper PPE
Scheduled waste from maintenance works of machineries, vehicles and tools will be placed
in designated area. Schedule wastes must be appropriately segregated stored and
disposed accordingly.
Storage of the scheduled waste and maintenance of the vehicle must be away from the
nearest water bodies to avoid runoff of spillage if any.
Scheduled Waste to be labelled, stored and disposed according to Department of
Environment's requirements Ensure that disposal of wastes undertaken by licensed
contractor.
Food wastage and normal construction wastage should dump in separate bin. Cover
system Food Wastage bin is better to protect air pollution. Its need to clear every week once
or as per condition of the wastage.
All food wastage firstly needs to put in shopping plastic bags or in the black colour garbage
bags. After that need to tie of garbage bag and dump into the Food Wastage bin.
