Consider a mixture of five hydrocarbons, which can be considered to form ideal mixtures in
both the liquid and vapor phases. The composition of the mixture is given below, along with
constants for each pure hydrocarbon for the vapor pressure function:

ln(𝑃! ) = 𝐴! − 𝐷! /𝑇

where P is in atmospheres and T is in Kelvin.

Component z A D
C3 0.2 9.816 2260
C4 0.1 9.922 2696
C5 0.2 10.173 3141
C6 0.3 10.264 3496
C7 0.2 10.465 3890

The mixture is passed through a continuous steady-state flash unit at an outlet pressure of
six atmospheres.

a) Over what range of outlet temperatures will the output from the flash unit include both
a liquid and a vapor phase? What are the compositions of the liquid and vapor phases
at the extremes of this temperature range?
b) If the outlet temperature is midway between those found in a) above, what fraction of
the outlet flow is vapor? What are the compositions of the liquid and vapor phases?

2. A three component mixture containing 30% A, 30% B, and 40% C, is to be run through a
continuous steady-state flash unit. The exit pressure from the flash unit will be one
atmosphere. “A” is non-condensible (vapor pressure approaches infinity) and C is non-volatile
(vapor pressure approaches zero) The vapor pressure of B is given by:

ln(𝑃" ) = 10.465 − 3890/𝑇

where PB is in atm and T is in Kelvins.

§ If the unit is operated so the flowrates of liquid and vapor leaving the unit are equal,
determine the compositions of the outlet streams and the outlet temperature.
§ If the unit is operated so the 30% of the B in the feed leaves the unit in the vapor
stream, determine the compositions of the outlet stream and the outlet temperature.

3. A mixture with three compounds A, B and C with 20, 30, 50 kmol/h, is feed at flash drum. The
flash is at 10 atm and it is necessary vaporize a half of the feed stream. What is the
temperature to reach this operating condition?

The equilibrium is calculated from

𝐾# = 0.0487 𝑇 − 14.777 𝐾$ = 0.0209 𝑇 − 6.5312 𝐾% = 0.01 𝑇 − 3.1885

The temperature is in Kelvin.
