CT Reel Functions
• Provide means of pumping fluids and balls
downhole while rotation using rotary
joint(swivel).
• Storage for Coiled tubing around drum core.
• Applied tension on reel, by reel motor not
too much or too little while RIH or POOH
• Spool CT in conjunction with levelwind
assembly.
• Depth measurement in conjunction with
travelling head and depth counter.

Components

• Diesel engine.
• Hydraulic pumps.
• Hydraulic oil reservoir and accumulators.
• Pressure control valves.

Function

• Provide mechanical energy by Diesel engine.

• Provide hydraulic energy for Injector and reel and others.
• Provide Hydraulic energy for PCE.
Pressure control
equipment(PCE)
Components

• Stripper
• Riser or lubricator sections
• Quad BOP
• Shear/seal or Combi BOP (optional)

Function

• Provide primary well intervention barriers

• Provide secondary well intervention barriers
• Provide tertiary well intervention barriers
Function Types Conventional
Stripper
•Activated from below
Primary barrier •Wellbore assisted.
•Harder to change packer
inserts while CT in place

Side door stripper

•Easier packer change out.
Seal in static and •Activated either from
dynamic conditions above or below

Tandem stripper
•Utilizes two packer above
Assembled directly each other.
below IH •During operation, use
upper packer and keeps
lower one as back up.

Radial stripper
•Shorter stack height.
Stripper

Mechanism
• Hydraulic oil enters pack-off chamber (A)
• and pressed piston(8) against packer bushing
• which compresses packer elements (Figure below)
against lower bushing, energizer and non-extrusion B
ring
• to seal around CT against CT A
• while hydraulic oil returns from retract chamber(B).
Quad BOP
Components

• Blind ram
• Shear ram
• Slip ram
• Pipe ram

Function

• Secondary well barrier

• Secure the well if leaks occur above BOP
• Capable of shearing CT and secure the well
• Hold CT in place in case of shearing.

Check valve

• Can be ball valve , flapper, dome

or dart.
• Most commonly Double flapper
check valve is used.
• Flapper is preferred to ball valve
due to the ability to pump down
balls.
Release joint types
• Hydraulic disconnect(BOSS)
• Shear release joints(By tension)

BOSS Release joint function

• allows release of the CT toolstring at a predetermined point.
• Operated by dropped ball locating on a seat within the tool.
• Hydraulic pressure applied to the tool will activate the release
mechanism at a predetermined pressure.
• Once released, circulation through the coil is re-established
through the upper part of the tool.
• The lower part of the release joint can be retrieved using a
conventional “GS” Type Running/Pulling Tool
Circulation sub and
burst disk
• Used to establish circulation path if nozzles
plugged during operation.
• Provides circulation with max flow rate.
• Operated by circulating ball and pressurize the
CT side.
• Can include burst disk which is opened by
differential pressure without ball.

Circulation sub types

• Single actuated by circulating balls
• Can include burst disk which is opened by differential
pressure without ball.
• Can be dual activated circulation sub which is opened by
differential pressure activated piston with or without ball.
MHA
• The Motorhead Assembly (MHA)
• Compact, heavy duty, integrated BHA
components.
• The MHA combines:
• Double Flapper Check Valve
• Heavy Duty Hydraulic Disconnect
• Dual Circulation Valve
• Straight bar

Auxiliary • Jar (up-stroke/down-stroke)

• Intensifier (up-stroke/down-
stroke)
tools • Centralizers
• Knuckle joints
• Nozzles
• Junk mills
• Fishing tools
• SSD Shifting tools
Main job tools • Perforation guns
• Lower completion assembly or
plugs
• Drill bits
Nozzles
• Pumping chemicals to remove various
types of scales.
• Lifting nozzles with N2 to kick off the
well
• Abrasive jets for stimulation or tubular
cutters
• Obstruction or fill cleanout
• Placing permanent(e.g., cement)or
temporary(e.g., sand) plugs
Junk mills
• Remove hard scales and fills
• Remove mechanical obstructions
• Used in conjunction with mud motors.
Fishing tools
Tool names from right to left:
• GS for internal fishnecks
• JDC for external fishnecks
• Flow activated releasable bulldog spears
for non-standard internal fishnecks
• Flow activated releasable overshots for
non-standard external fishnecks
• The Rope Spear for removal of wireline,
electric line, or braided line
