MATHEMATICS

IN OUR WORLD
Objectives:
In this lesson, the learners will be able to;
● Identify the uses of mathematics,
● Articulate the importance of mathematics in
one’s life,
● Identify the patterns in nature,
● express appreciation for mathematics as
human endeavor.
Mathematics is used in:
● Technology
● Natural Science
● Business
● Medicine
● Construction
“The only way to learn mathematics
is to do mathematics.”

PATTERNS
Patterns:
1. Spatial
2. Temporal
3. Linguistic
4. Sequential
Spatial
Pattern
a perceptual
structure,
placement, or
arrangement of
objects on
Temporal
Pattern
a segment of
signals that recurs
frequently in the
whole temporal
signal sequence.
Linguistic
Pattern
grammatical rules
that allow their users
to speak properly in
a common.
Sequential
Pattern
the group of things
that come one after
another

REFLEXIVE SYMMETRY

ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY
Symmetry
Line of symmetry is the imaginary line
or axis along which you fold a figure to
obtain the symmetrical halves. It
basically divides an object into two
mirror-image halves. The line of
symmetry can be vertical, horizontal or
diagonal. There may be one or more
lines of symmetry
Symmetry
Reflexive symmetry (reflective or line
symmetry) is present if an object is
symmetrical about a dotted line which
divides it into two equal halves

Rotational symmetry is present

when an object is rotated about
an axis and it appears exactly the
same as it did before rotation.
Spiral
a curve which
emanates from a
point, moving
farther away as it
revolves around
the point.
Meander
a series of regular
sinuous curves,
bends, loops, turns, or
windings in the
channel of a river,
stream, or other
watercourse.
Wave
a disturbance that
transfer energy
though a matter or
space with a little or
no associated mass
transport.
Foam
is a substance
formed by
trapping pockets
of gas in a liquid
or solid.
Tessellations
is the tilling of plane
using one or more
geometric shapes,
called tiles, which
no overlaps and no
gaps.
Fracture/Crack
is the separation of
an object or
material into two or
more pieces under
the action of stress.
Stripes
made by a series of
bands or stripes,
often of the same
width and color
along the length.
Fractals
a pattern that
repeats at
different scales.
Affine
Transformations

the processes of
reflection, rotation
and scaling.
