MATHEMATICS

IN OUR WORLD
WHAT IS MATHEMATICS?

 Study of numbers and arithmetic operations

 A tool or a collection of skills that help us answer
question of “How many” or “How much”
 A science of logical reasoning, drawing
conclusions from assumed premises or strategic
reasoning
WHAT IS MATHEMATICS?

 Mathematics is universal
 It deals with patterns
WHAT IS A PATTERN?

 A form or model proposed for imitation

 Something designed or used as a model for making things
 A natural or chance configuration
 An artistic, musical, literary, mechanical, or mathematical
design or form
 Patterns are regular, repeated or recurring forms of designs.
 It deals with symmetry, fractals, tessellations, spirals, foams,
and stripes.
WHAT IS SYMMETRY?

 Symmetry indicates that you can draw an

imaginary line across an object and the
resulting parts are mirror images of each other.

WHAT ARE FRACTALS?

 Fractals are objects in which the same patterns

occur again and again at different scales and
sizes.
 A fractal is any of various extremely irregular
curves or shapes for which any suitably chosen
part is similar in shape to a given larger or
smaller part when magnified or reduced to the
same size.

WHAT ARE TESSELLATIONS?

 Tessellations are patterns that are formed by

repeated cubes or tiles.
 Mosaic
 Tessellation is a covering of an infinite
geometric plane without gaps or overlaps by
congruent plane figures of one type or a few
types

WHAT ARE SPIRALS

 Spirals
are shapes that wind in gradually
or tightening curve.

WHAT ARE FOAMS?

 Foam is an object formed by trapping of gas in liquid or

solid.
 A foam is a light frothy mass of fine bubbles formed in or
on surface of a liquid or from a liquid: such as
 A frothy mass formed in salivating or sweating
 A stabilized froth produced chemically or mechanically and
used especially in fighting oil fires
 A material in a lightweight cellular form resulting from
introduction of gas bubbles during manufacture

WHAT ARE STRIPES?

 A stripe is a long narrow band or strip, typically

of the same width throughout its length,
differing in color or texture from the surface on
either side of it.

CONNECTION OF PATTERNS TO MATH

 Every pattern needs a mathematical concept,

idea, computation, representation, or model
 To study and learn math, one must understand
the concept of patterns
PATTERNS IN MATH

 2, 7, 12, 17,…
1 1 1
 1, , , ,…
2 3 4
 3, 6, 9 ,12, 15
 1, 2, 4, 8, 16
 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8,…
PATTERNS IN MATH

1x1=1
11 x 11 = 121
111 x 111 = 12321
1111 x 1111 = 1234321
11111 x 11111 = 123454321
111111 x 111111 = ?
