MY FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE

The transition from high school to university can be challenging due to differences in
teaching methods, academic requirements, and relationships. First-year students face
psychological, academic, and social shocks due to new teaching methods, academic
pressure, and mental health issues. This narrative essay aims to explain academic
pressure, social security challenges, and difficulties in adapting to the new environment
faced by first-year students.

First-year students are subject to a variety of academic requirements. According to a

South African study, the majority of students experience some stress and mental
challenges as they adjust to social and academic life, which increases their risk of
dropping out of school. Universities employ different teaching methods than high schools
do. In this educational environment, students have trouble integrating. Students must
follow a strict schedule because studying involves a significant workload. First-year
students consequently struggle to adapt to new learning techniques. Additionally, it can
be difficult to acclimate to the large workload and influence from outside the university.

Security is one of the most essential needs for everyone, but it is even more crucial for
students. Due to their distance from their families and residences, many university
students do not have social security. Many first-year students who rent from other
students have trouble because they are not used to this way of living. In addition, first-
year students who lack a parent or other adult to act as a mentor sometimes veer from
their course and wind up doing negative things. Living away from their parents is
therefore a huge impediment and struggle for first-year students.

First-year students can get lost for a few days while they are in a new setting. Finding
the necessary rooms is a challenge for students. In various buildings and under several
faculties, universities have a large number of lecture halls and chambers. During the first
few days, first-year students frequently have trouble finding their lecture halls and arrive
late for class. Due to all of this, kids frequently miss class due to conflicts, which
negatively affects their academic performance.

As a result, first-year students experience a variety of problems with safety, adjustment,

and getting lost at school. First-year students will encounter these difficulties because
they are getting used to a new system. But students shouldn't give up or lose heart since
once they adjust to the system, things will return to normal. Every learner will eventually
come across anything new for the first time, and those challenges are the same.
