Transitioning from work/high school to college

Going to college can be one of the best moments of a person’s life and is an

experience a person will remember forever, but there are a few things that come

along with transitioning from high school to college. Three main things that come

with transitioning are the new atmosphere introduced, the responsibilities put

upon students, and the pressure and stress that comes along with being in

college.

Firstly, students are being introduced to a new atmosphere and the campus

is quite large, being a new student and not knowing where to go can have them

ending up lost. Students are best to get a map on the first day since getting lost is

something very common for students. Going to college and having to learn a new

subject and get use to the new setting can be overwhelming. Students also have

to worry about knowing where all the classrooms are, colleges have many

different rooms and hallways and all these hallways teach different subjects.

Students will want to avoid the fact of ending up in the wrong class by studying

the building and rooms and getting use to the setting of all of it, this will come

overtime. It is very important that students get use to where all the important
buildings are, like the clinic, the school pharmacy, and the library for studying.

Knowing the clinic and pharmacy is very important just in case of an emergency

and anything medically needed, the library is something many students use for

some quite well studying and doing homework.

Secondly, college comes with many responsibilities and students are

encouraged to learn them fast to avoid any issues. Students not being responsible

can lead to many issues such as not getting homework done because if homework

isn’t completed, students lose that grade because in college the professors will

not remind any student. Another issue is students getting to their class and being

on time, this can become an issue because the professor will not wait for any

student to arrive. Knowing that it’s the student’s responsibility to know when

class starts is all on them, students should get into a routine, so lateness isn’t an

issue because missing an important part of a lecture isn’t good. One of the main

issues that happens is students forgetting material they need for class, an

example is students need safety glasses when doing a lab and without the safety

glasses, that student will not be allowed to participate for safety reasons.

Thirdly, stress is something that comes along with being in college and it is

something every student gets use to, it is something students adapt to and it

eventually becomes normal to them. The two main sources of stress that happen
in college are from the workload, a lot of classes come with a heavy workload and

even sometimes multiple classes give out homework but no matter what the

homework needs to be done to get the grades. Another source of stress is the

due dates and keeping up with them, the due dates can get busy and stressful

because most of the time due dates are everywhere and students need to stay on

top of what’s due for each class. Organization is the main thing that can help

students with their stress because keeping organized with class work and due

dates will help get everything properly done.

Lastly, the three main challenges that students face when changing over

from school/work into college are the different environment, new duties, and

added tension.
