What I know
Time and practice are greatly
important for students.
Children have an easier time
learning a second language,
but anyone can do it at any
age.
Differentiation is important,
so that students are
approached with
individualized learning that
can support them in the best
way.
It is best to start with the
basics to know that your
students do not have any
gaps.
What I want to know
What are the approaches that
are best practices?
What can be done if the
second language is not
encouraged at home?
Are there ways students can
use their first language in a
productive manner to help
them learn a second
language?
What are the common things
that are done in the
classrooms that are harmful
to ELL students?
What I have learned
It is important to structure
lesson using the four parts of
language, it is the best way to
ensure that you create ‘best
practice approaches.
It is not necessary to use
second language at home.
The most important thing is
that you learned another
language.
Using the L1 to aid
understanding is very
important. Learning is best
when the teacher can speak
the same L1, so if the
students have the opportunity
to converse to create
understanding, it is a
productive way of learning
English.
Not allowing students to
express their culture and
language in the classroom can
be the most detrimental
things to do. It stops them
from contributing and sharing
their true self.
2. ESSAY WRITING
Compare and contrast the Grammar- translation Method and Natural Approach.

The grammar translation method is a method of teaching foreign languages derived from
classical method of teaching Greek and Latin. In grammar-translation classes students learned
grammatical rules and then apply those rules by translating sentences between the target
language and native language but the natural approach According to Krashen, language
acquisition does not happen when we study and practice grammar rules. Acquisition happens
when we understand messages. Spending many hours on grammar exercises and very little time
on listening to spoken English is therefore not the best use of classroom time.
