Numbers and Number Sense: Multiplies
Mentally 2-digit by 1- to 2-Digit Numbers;
Mentally multiplying 2-Digit by 2-Digit
Numbers with Products up to 200
(M4NS-Id-42.3; M4NS-Id-45.4)

Objective:
1. Multiplies mentally 2-digit by 1-to2-digit numbers with
product up to 200 and explain the strategies used
Opening Song & Prayer
Presentation
 Paper and pen computation could help you solve problems,
but it would be faster if you do it mentally. Practice your
brain doing mental
multiplication using the following examples:
Example 1. 12 x 9
Solution
*Multiply the ones (2 x 9 = 18)
*Multiply the tens by the ones. (10 x 9 = 90)
*Add the two partial products. (18 + 90 = 108)
*Answer 12 x 9 = 108
Discussion
Example 2. 23 x 7
Solution
*Multiply the ones (3 x 7 = 21)
*Multiply the tens by the ones. (20 x 7 = 140)
*Add the two partial products. (21 + 140 = 161)
*Answer 23 x 7 = 151
Discussion
Example 3. 45 x 4
Solution
*Multiply the ones (5 x ___ = 20)
*Multiply the tens by the ones. (___ x 4 = 160)
*Add the two partial products. (20 + 160 = ___)
*Answer 45 x 4 = ___
Discussion
 Let us practice more mental exercises.
A kilogram of mango costs PhP 75. How much will you pay
for 3 kilograms?

1. How much is a kilogram of mango?

2. What is the cost of 3 kilograms of mango?
3. What did you do to solve the problem?
4. Can you solve it without using paper and pencil? How?
Discussion
Mentally multiplying 2-digit by 2-digit numbers with products
up to 200
A piece of bread costs PhP 12. How much will you pay for 14
pieces?

1. How much is each piece of bread?

2. What is the cost of 14 pieces of bread?
3. What did you do to solve the problem?
4. Can you solve it without using paper and pencil? How?
Discussion
 Below are important steps in multiplying mentally 2- digit-by-
2-digit numbers with products up to 200.
Example 1. Multiply 12 by 14.
Solution A
Step 1. Multiply the multiplicand by the ones in the multiplier.
12 x 4 = 48
Step 2: Multiply the multiplicand by the tens in
the multiplier.
12 x 10=120
Discussion
Step 3: Add the partial products.
48 + 120 = 168

Solution B. Using Distributive Property

12 x 14 = (12 x 10) + (12 x 4)
= 120 + 48
= 168
Discussion
Example 2. A piece of facemask costs PhP 16. How much does
it cost if you buy 12 pieces of facemask?
Solution A:
Step 1. Multiply the multiplicand by the ones in the multiplier.
16 x 2=32
Step 2: Multiply the multiplicand by the tens in the multiplier.
16 x 10=160
Discussion
Step 3: Add the partial products.
32 + 160=192

Solution 2. Using Distributive property

16 x 12 = (16 x 10) + (16 x 2)
= 160 + 32
= 192

Solving Word Problems Involving Multiplication
Jeff can puff-up 24 balloons in 1 minute. How many balloons
can he puff-up in 15 minutes?

 To analyze and solve the problem, you

can use these steps:
A. UNDERSTAND
1. Read and understand the problem.(Refer to the problem above)
2. Know what is asked for in the problem.
The number of balloons he can puff-up in 15 minutes.
Discussion
3. Find the necessary information.
The given facts are: 24 balloons; 15 minutes.
B. PLAN
1. Determine the operation to be used. Multiplication
2. Write the number sentence. 24 x 15 = n
C. SOLVE
Solve using the operation you learned from the previous lesson.
Multiply the multiplicand by ones of the
multiplier
24 x 5 =120
Discussion
Multiply the multiplicand by tens of the multiplier
24 x 10 =240
Add the two partial products 120 + 240 = 360

D. CHECK and LOOK BACK

See if the answer makes sense. State the complete answer.
Jeff can puff-up 360 balloons in 15 minutes.
