1. Intellectual Virtue
- Cultivated through instruction and thus needs time and experience to hone, e.g.
Wisdom, Understanding, Prudence, etc.
2. Moral Virtue
It is in the nature of moral qualities that they are destroyed by deficiency and excess.
Virtues are destroyed by excess and deficiency, but they are preserved by the mean.
iii. The pleasure or pain that actions cause the agent may serve as
an index of moral progress, since good conduct consists in a
proper attitude towards pleasure and pain
It is with pleasures and pains that moral goodness is concerned.
Pleasure induces us to behave badly
Pain induces us to shrink from fine actions.
The soul attains its natural development in relation to conditions by which it is naturally
made better or worse. When people become bad, it is because of pleasures and pains.

Pleasure and pain are the standards by which we regulate our actions. Virtue is
concerned with pains and pleasures.
1. Feelings
- all conditions that are attended by pleasure or pain, e.g. desire, anger, fear, envy, joy,
hatred, etc.
2. Faculties
- having the capability to feel, e.g. capable of anger, sorrow, pity, etc.
3. Dispositions
- conditions in virtue of which we are well or ill-disposed with respect to the feelings
concerned, e.g. bad disposition towards anger if the tendency is too strong or too weak,
and a good disposition if the tendency is moderate.
Virtue is a disposition.
Human excellence will be the disposition that makes one a good man and causes him
to perform his function well.
Mean - that which is neither excessive nor deficient. The mean is not the same for all

It is possible, to feel too much or too little of a feeling, and both of these are wrong. But
to have these feelings at the right times on the right grounds towards the right people for
the right motive and in the right way is to feel them in an intermediate, this is the mark of
virtue.
Virtue - mean between two kinds of vice, one of excess and the other of deficiency.
Virtue discovers the mean and chooses it.
Remember: Not every action admits of a mean. Some actions are just evil in
themselves. It impossible to act rightly, one is always wrong, e.g. a man can never
commit adultery with the right woman.

viii. The mean is often nearer to one extreme than to the other, or
seems nearer because of our natural tendencies
The mean states are excessive compared with the deficient and deficient compared
with the excessive.
A brave man appears rash compared to a coward, and cowardly compared with a rash
man.
A mean is between two vices one of excess and the other of deficiency, it aims to hit the
mean point in feelings and actions. It is difficult business to be good, and it is difficult to
find the mid-point.
1. Keep away from the extreme. Since it is extremely difficult to hit the mean and
choose the lesser of the evils.
2. We must notice the errors into which we ourselves are liable to fall.
By following these practical rules we shall have the best chance of hitting the mean.
It is not easy to define by rule for how long, and how much.
But one should incline sometimes towards excess and sometimes towards deficiency,
we shall most easily hit upon the mean, that is the right course.
