ENG3C
Summative Project – Oral Presentation
** Worth 10% of your final grade

Task:

1. Choose a novel that has been made into a movie. Read the novel and watch movie, paying close
attention to differences and similarities (comparisons and contrasts) between the two. Decide
which media form you prefer.

2. Then you must create a convincing argument in speech form that persuades the class why they
should read the book rather than watch the movie OR vice versa.

 The speech MUST include research material about your book/movie from other sources. You
need to use at least two (2) outside sources.

 Include a beginning, middle and end.

 Open with an interesting beginning – a quotation from someone in authority may be useful.
Identify your book and movie, author (of book) and thesis.
 Identify three supporting points and support those reasons with examples from your
book/movie.
 Conclude with a memorable ending.

 Include at least three (3) quotations and/or specific scenes from the movie.

 Also include a short clip (2-3 minutes) from the movie to support your argument.

 Watch body language, posture, pacing, eye contact and diction. All of these qualities will be
evaluated.

Your informal persuasive speech will be presented to the class on your assigned date. It should be 7-
10 minutes in duration (including the 2-3 minute clip from your movie). It is extremely important that
you stay within time constraints.

You will need to hand in a written copy of the speech. With citations of your research included.

This unit will be worth 10% of the course mark. Each of the following elements will be part of the
evaluation (rubric attached):
1. Outline of argument (in point-form);
2. Rough draft (with at least one peer-evaluation – must be submitted with your good copy!);
3. Good copy of speech  with highlighted/labeled rhetorical devices, method(s) of development
identified, and a Works Cited page (including all sources accessed for this assignment – must use
at least TWO secondary sources!!).
4. Final oral presentation – including movie clip;
