Academic Project: Thesis 2022

Development of Inter-City
Bus Terminal
Hyderabad, India

The project aims to design a bus terminal on a 55-acre site in Miyapur, Hyderabad, that combines
functionality with leisure, addressing the challenges of a sloped site with a 33m level difference and
the presence of numerous boulders. The goal is to create a prototype for future urban landscapes
that combines resilience, aesthetics, and forward-thinking urban adaptability while addressing spa-
tial limitations.
The proposed 55-acre site in Miyapur, Hyderabad, Telangana,
is strategically located along the Miyapur - Bachupally highway
and 2 km from the Miyapur junction on NH9. The Inter City Bus
Terminal initiative aims to address the 10-15 km commuter gap
in western city regions, demonstrating Miyapur’s potential as a
vital transport hub at the intersection of Mumbai and Bangalore
highways.

tion. This expanse has been thoughtfully
divided into five distinct layers, strategi-
cally aligned with the site’s contours to
optimize usability and harmony.
The architectural concept evolves in a functional manner, dynamically utilizing the
addition and subtraction of blocks in conjunction with the natural contours of the site
terrain. This evolutionary approach not only enhances the design but also seam-
lessly integrates the exact design requirements without disrupting the site’s innate
topography. The site itself boasts meticulous organization and planning, skillfully in-
corporating site contours and circulation pathways into its layout. Multiple levels are
thoughtfully arranged to harmonize with the site’s topography, maintaining a har-
monious coexistence. A network of ramps and subways is strategically designed to
facilitate a seamless flow towards each distinct block, enhancing connectivity and
accessibility.

The design harmoniously merges form and function with folded plate roof structures that mimic the site’s undulating terrain, seamlessly integrating building blocks
into their natural surroundings. The louver facade not only enhances aesthetics but also facilitates airflow, filters out dust particles, and manages light penetration,
while concurrently safeguarding against moisture and promoting building longevity, and also blends with the natural environment, enhancing the overall integration
of the architecture with its surroundings.
The use of a roundabout as a traffic control strate-
gy is suggested, improving safety, lowering traffic,
and streamlining access for passengers and ser-
vice vehicles.

The Entrance Lounge welcomes passengers with a landscaped interior, illuminated by natural light from strategically positioned cutouts and
transparent roofing, creating an inviting space for ticketing and waiting.
The bus bay arrangement, optimized for space and efficiency in a single direction, serves
as the foundation for a practical yet harmonious and dynamic design.
The bus terminal features distinct levels of circulation for various modes of transportation: city buses at Level +7m for efficient passenger movement,
private vehicles at Level +12m with a common entrance and separated exit, and intercity buses at Level +19m with a common entrance but exit via a
dedicated flyover.
The main terminal building is intelligently divided into two departure blocks, optimizing functionality and flow, facilitated by the presence
of two central cores, making navigation easy for passengers. This architectural approach gives the impression of two distinct structures.
