General Physics I

Introduction
MERLIN M.EVASCO
Teacher
Learning Objectives:
Relate physics to the branches of
natural science
Discuss the branches and
subbranches of physics
Discuss the development of physics
and the scientific method
Discuss how physics and technology
change people’s way of living
What is Physics?
 Physics is the study of everyday
phenomena. It aims to explain these
phenomena in terms of the
fundamental laws.
 Physics is the study of matter and
energy and their interactions.
What is Science?
 Science is a systematized body of
knowledge based on facts gathered
through observations and
experiments in order to formulate a
verifiable conclusion or law that
serves as basis of technology for
the benefit of man and his
environment.
What is Science?
 Comesfrom the latin word scientia
meaning knowledge or knowing
Major Branches of Science
 Natural Science
 Social Science

 Applied Science
Natural Science
 deals with the
understanding and
description of nature. It is
classified into Biological
Science and Physical
Science.

Science
Biological Science
 deals with the study of
living things such as
Zoology, Botany,
Microbiology and
Genetics
Physical Science
 deals with the study of
nonliving things such as
Physics, Chemistry,
Astronomy, Geology,
Meteorology.
Social Science
 deals with human
behavior which is focused
on the social and cultural
aspects of society.
Examples are
Psychology, Economics,
Politics and Ethics.
Applied Science
 Is the application of
theoretical sciences.
Examples include
Medicine, Engineering,
Architecture.
 Applied science refers to
the study of a particular field
such as engineering or
medicine.
 Technology refers to the
practice of any or all of the
applied sciences which have
practical value.

 The Physics of Cars
PHYSICS AND ITS BRANCHES
 Classical Physics – refers to

the traditional topics in

physics that were recognized
and developed before the
beginning of the 20th century.
Concerned with matter and
energy under normal
condition.
PHYSICS AND ITS BRANCHES
 Modern Physics – refers to

the concepts in physics that

have surfaced since the
beginning of the 20th century.
Concerned with the behavior
of matter and energy under
extreme condition.
Mechanics – The study of forces
acting on bodies whether at rest
or in motion.
 Statics – on forces acting on

bodies at rest
 Kinematics – on motion

without regard to its cause

 Dynamics – on motion and

the forces that affect it.

Mechanics
 The science of HOW objects
move (behave) under given
forces.
 (Usually) Does not deal with the
sources of forces.
 Answers the question:

“Given the forces, how

do objects move”?
