CURRENT TRENDS AND PRINCIPLES OF PEDIATRIC
IN NURSING

 DEFINITION

 Pediatrics is the specialty of medical


science Concerned with physical,
mental and social health of children
from birth to young adulthood.

 It is concerned with preventive,


curative and rehabilitative care of
children.
 PEDIATRIC NURSING –
 Pediatric nursing is the practice
of nursing involved in the health
care of children from infancy
through adolescence.

 TRENDS IN PEDIATRICS AND PEDIATRIC


NURSING –
 Care of children is the recent trend. The
sub areas are neonatology, Perinatology,
Pediatric surgery, Pediatric cardiology etc.
Child health will also progress by various
movements towards the aim to improve the
survival and well being of all children .

 Primary nursing

1. FAMILY CENTERED CARE –

• Family centered care is based on the


philosophy that quality care can be
provided in an environment that family
promote the psychological and
physiological health of the child.
• it assumes that if the family gain adequate
information and support capable of making
health care decisions.

• There are two concepts of family centered


care –

a) Enabling
b) Empowering
A. Enabling: Enable families by creating
opportunities and means for all family
members to display their current abilities
and competencies to acquire new ones.

B. Empowering: Interact such that families


maintain or acquire a sense of control over
their lives and acknowledge positive
changes.

2. HIGH TECHNOLOGY CARE –

 The advancement in the diagnostic


technology has made detection of many
disorders even in the fetal period.
Laboratory methods to assess fetal
maturity and health of the fetus in the
womb.

 Advancement in the medical field has


created the care of children too
technologically versatile.
 The nurse also needs to be
technologically competent enough to
meet the nursing care needs of children.

3. EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE –

 In evidence based practice, nurse need to


make decision on the best available
evidences.

 EBP in nursing provides a systematic


approach to enable nurses to effectively
use the best solution related to nursing
practice.

4. PRIMARY NURSING –

 The system of primary nursing provides


extreme commitment to patient
accountability.
 24 hours responsibility and
accountability by one nurse for the care
of a small group of patient is possible
with primary nursing.

5. CASE MANAGEMENT –

 It is usually used in outpatient setting by


assigning a case management to patient
or a group of patient.

6. CHILD ORIENTED ENVIRONMENT –

 A Child friendly environment should be


provided to a Child who is admitted to
Hospital.

 Skilled staff.
 Liberal visiting hours.

7. ATRAUMATIC CARE –

 “ First do not harm”

 Provision of therapeutic care –


Minimize physical and psychological
distress.

 Therapeutic care –

oPrevention
o Diagnosis
o Treatment
o Palliation

8. COST CONTAINMENT –

 Best possible care with minimal costs.


 Prevent duplication of Nursing care.

 It is a management technique utilized to


reduce the cost of Hospitalization.

9. ETHICS IN PEDIATRIC NURSING –

• Non maleficence : Do no harm


• Beneficence: Do good.
• Justices : There are three aspects as legal
justice , respect for right and fair
distribution
Of resources even the nurses’ time and
attention.
• Respect for autonomy: Respect the
individual‘s right to make informed and
thought out decisions for themselves.
• Truth telling.

10. RIGHTS OF CHILDREN –


• Protection rights: Against maltreatment
neglect and all forms of exploitation.
• Provision rights: Right to food, Health
care, Education and benefit from social
security.
• Participation rights : Right to act in certain
circumstances and the right to be involved
in decision making .
• Right to develop in an atmosphere of
affection and security, and wherever
possible, in the care and under the
responsibility of his or her parents.
 Right to enjoy the benefits of Social
security, including Nutrition, Housing and
Medical care.
• Right to free education.
• Right to full opportunity for play and
recreation.
• Right to a name and Nationality.
• Right to special care, if handicapped.
• Right to be among the first to service
protection and relief in times of disaster.
• Right to learn to be a useful member of
society and to develop in a healthy and
normal manner and in conditions of
freedom and dignity.
• Right to be brought up in spirit of
understanding, Tolerance, Friendship
among the people, Peace and universal
brotherhood.
• Right to enjoy this rights regardless of
race, Colour, Sex, Religion, National or
Social origin.

11. OTHER TRENDS –


 KMC – Kangaroo mother care
• First presented by Rey and Martinez in
Bogota,
Columbia.
• Care of preterm infants carried skin to skin
with the mother.
• Promote health and well being of infants
born preterm as well as full term.
• Early, continuous and prolonged skin to
skin contact.
• Exclusive Breast feeding.
• Initiated in Hospital and Continued at
home.
 ROOMING IN CONCEPT –
• Placing of the new born in the same room
as the mother – early post – Partum
period , to faster maternal – Fetal bonding
and facilitate Breast feeding .

 CHILD TO CHILD PROGRAM –

• Government programs.
• Insurance.
• Health promotion.
• Complimentary and alternatives medicine.
• Emergency preparedness.
