ABSTRACT

Philippine State College of Aeronautics (PhilSCA) Basa-Palmayo Campus

offers two courses which are specialized in aviation courses known as the Bachelor of

Science in Aviation Electronics Technology (Avionics) and Bachelor of Science in

Aircraft Maintenance Technology. It is a high-quality educational school that provides

world-class aeronautics professionals. Because of the performance of its graduates,

who are employed across the world, PhilSCA is also recognized as the Philippines' top

aeronautical school.

The main focus of this research is on the academic performance of the 3rd year

students of PhilSCA because it tackles about the distance learning, particularly

through online learning. This study aims to assess the academic performance of the

students during the pandemic because several problems have been identified so the

researchers believe that this study will also benefit to the students to sustain the

quality of education for future generations. Data was gathered through the online

survey and a descriptive method.

The majority of the survey questionnaire's answers showed that the

respondents were well-informed that the students still face difficulties with Online

learning, specifically when it comes to having access to some devices. This simply

shows that the student's academic performance is affected by the pandemic. It means

that students exert the effort for them to cope with their

studies despite the difficulties they face.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Pandemic has changed the system of life, including schools. Millions of

students cannot enter school like they used to be. This pandemic forces schools to be

carried out through distance learning, particularly through online learning. Many

problems were faced when the pandemic occurred, such as the readiness of

technology infrastructure, human resources, and systems management.

In 2020, the impact of COVID-19 has been noted in practically all areas of

activity, but its effect has been particularly strong in teaching and learning. The

pandemic has shaken up the landscape of higher education worldwide, with responses

to the pandemic from higher education institutions generally falling into three

categories (Hodges, Moore, Lockee, Trust, & Bond, 2020; Smalley, 2020):

maintaining in-class teaching with social distancing, creating hybrid models (blended

learning, limitation of students in campus) or moving to online instruction.

Existing literature on the transition from face-to-face teaching to blended,

online, or flipped classroom learning studies these changes under the premise that

the instructional changes are carefully planned by the

1
Republic of the Philippines
PHILIPPINE STATE COLLEGE OF
AERONAUTICS

Institute of Engineering and

instructors. Most often, the move to online teaching is carried out voluntarily

by the teaching staff with help from support personnel. It is a process that takes both

resources –human, intellectual, technical– and time: it is estimated that adapting a

typical course to online teaching (including planning, preparation, and development)

takes between six and nine months (Hodges et al., 2020). However, research on how

to make these sudden transitions rapidly, and the potential effects of the decisions

taken by institutions and instructors regarding the use of different instructional

methods or supporting technologies, means (or at least meant before COVID-19)

venturing into uncharted territory.

If we observe the changes in teaching and learning caused by COVID-

19 under the lens of emergency remote teaching, it could be argued that most, or at

least part, of the findings from existing research on online learning might not apply to

this situation. However, it is also true that the decisions that instructors have had to

make to deliver their courses are not that different from the intervention features or

learning design options they have to choose when they plan, design, and implement an

online course. Admittedly, some of these options, such as breadth (whole program,

course, portion, of course, brief episode) or modality (blended, semi-blended) are

imposed by the pandemic situation and cannot be chosen, but instructors do

have some

degree of freedom in their decision about the remaining ones.

The academic performance of students is a key feature in education (Rono,

2013). It is considered to be the center around which the whole education system

revolves. Narad and Abdullah (2016) opined that the academic performance of

students determines the success or failure of any academic institution. Signh, Malik,

and Signh (2016) also argued that the academic performance of students had a direct

impact on the socio-economic development of a country. Similarly, Farooq,

Chaudhry, Shafiq, and Behanu (2011), asserted that students’ academic performance

serves as a bedrock for knowledge acquisition and the development of skills.

Additionally, Farooq et al., (2011) emphasized that the topmost priority of all

educators is the academic performance of students. According to Narad and Abdullah

(2016), academic performance is the knowledge gained which is assessed by marks by

a teacher and/or educational goals set by students and teachers to be achieved over a

specific period. They added that these goals are measured by using continuous

assessment or examinations results.

Background of the Study

This study aims to assess the academic performance of the students during the

pandemic. Pandemic has had a major impact on how worldwide education is

delivered. The sudden shift of education from face-to-face to online classes highly

affects the academic performance of students.

3
Republic of the Philippines

AERONAUTICS

“Literature on the efficacy of online courses is expansive and divided”

(Driscoll et al., 2012). Some studies favor traditional classroom instruction, stating

“online learners will quit more easily” and “online learning can lack feedback for both

students and instructors” (Atchley et al., 2013). Because of these shortcomings,

student retention, satisfaction, and performance can be compromised. Like traditional

teaching, distance learning also has its apologists who aver online education produces

students who perform as well or better than their traditional classroom counterparts

(Westhuis et al., 2006).

Online learning, distance, and continuing education have become a panacea

for this unprecedented global pandemic, despite the challenges posed to both

educators and learners. Transitioning from traditional face-to- face learning to online

learning can be an entirely different experience for the learners and the educators,

which they must adapt to with little or no other alternatives available. The education

system and the educators have adopted “Education in Emergency” through various

online platforms and are compelled to adopt a system that they are not prepared for.

Learning during a pandemic is a unique experience, to say the least. With

some colleges holding all courses remotely and others trying a mix of in- class

discussions and online learning, every student's experience so far has been slightly

different. This study investigated the overall learning experience after the sudden shift

from face-to-face to online distance learning due to the

pandemic lockdown. The study assessed variation in students' academic performance.

Statement of the Problem

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This chapter describes how the study was conducted and the method the

researchers used in gathering the necessary data for the completion of the study. This

includes the research design, research location, participants of the study, the

instrument used, validation of the instrument, data gathering procedure, and statistical

treatment of data.

Research Design

This study made use of a quantitative type research design to assess the

academic performance of the student during the pandemic in the Philippine State

College of Aeronautics Basa – Palmayo Campus. Descriptive research design is

usually useful for examining many issues and problems. This design has an advantage

for this study because it can measure current practices and will provide the required

information within a short period.

Research Location

The research has been done online in Philippine State College of Aeronautics

Basa – Palmayo Campus located in FloridaBlanca, Pampanga,

Philippines. This school is the only college of aeronautics under the government in the

whole country. The said state college has a notable connection between the students

and instructors.

Participants of the Study

Data was collected from the enrolled students of 3 rd year BS Aircraft

Maintenance Technology. The total number of respondents were 178 students. The

number of student participants was determined by using Slovin’s formula. This

formula was used to calculate the sample size given the population size and a margin

of error.

Slovin’s formula:

n = N/ (1 + Ne ^2) n= 321/ (1+321(5%) ^2 = 178

Where:

n = sample size,

N = total population = 321 E

= marginal error = 5%

Research Instruments

In this study, the researchers used a questionnaire through Google forms to

utilize a survey. Google forms are the most suited data collecting tool for the current

conditions in our situation. A questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a

series of questions and other prompts to gather information from respondents.

The questionnaire is requiring the respondents to indicate their level of

agreement and disagreement with the items. The researcher used a 4-point Likert

scale. The responses ranged from 4-Strongly Agree (SA), 3-Agree (A), 2- Disagree

(D) and 1- Strongly Disagree (SD).

The questionnaire consists of a total of 25 items and has 3 sections. Section 1,

questions the difficulties of online learning. In section 2, it questions their

performance. And section 3 questions how they cope with the difficulties of online

learning.

Validation of the Instruments

In able to validate the instruments and check their reliability. The instruments

undergo a validation process from a technical instructor of the Philippine State

College of Aeronautics Basa – Palmayo Campus. A technical instructor validated the

survey questionnaires.

The Observation below is deduced from table 3 which shows the result
evaluation of the participants in terms of Coping up.

The “I ask my classmates for activities and lessons for every synchronous
meeting I miss” got a mean value of 3.34, which falls to the remark of “Agree” and
marks as highest Weighted Mean. It shows that consulting other classmates could help
them in making up their work in every synchronous meeting.

In “I ask help if I don’t know how to use the technology required” and “I buy
load for data if I don’t have an internet connection” obtained the same mean of 3.02
with the remarks of “Agree”. And in “I use mobile data if my internet connection is
poor” got the mean of 3.13 which is “Agree’. Lastly, the “I do some research if I
don’t understand the lesson” gained a mean value of
3.28 which is under the remark of “Agree”.

On the other hand, the “I borrow someone’s device when I don’t have one to
use” marks as the Lowest Weighted Mean which obtained a mean value of 2.72 under

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, conclusion, and recommendations based

on the result of the data and their implications.

Summary of Findings

The salient findings of this study are presented in this portion of the chapter,

following the statement of the research problems presented earlier.

1. What are the difficulties faced by the students in online classes

during a pandemic?

The highest weighted mean is the “It is difficult to have access to a certain

device/s for learning online” got 3.32 which is “Agree”. While, the lowest weighted

mean in the variable of Difficulties of Online Learning is the “It is difficult for me

to use the distance learning technology (computer, tablet, video calls, learning

applications, etc.)” obtained a mean of 2.77 which also “Agree”.

The overall results in the Difficulties obtained a general weighted mean of

2.98 which is “Agree”. This shows that students Agree that they faced Difficulties

with Online Learning.

2. Does the pandemic affect the Academic Performance of the

Students?

The highest weighted mean in the variation of in terms of their academic

performance is the “Sometimes don’t actively participate every group work” that

obtained a mean of 3.18 which is “Agree.” Group activities are a way to improve

the academic performance of the students even if it is virtual. While the lowest

weighted mean is “I don’t do advance reading with my handouts” which obtained

2.65 which is “Agree”. Surely the student will prioritize finishing their other tasks

more than doing the advanced reading.

The overall result in terms of Academic Performance gained the grand mean

of 2.87 with the remark “Agree”.

3. How did they cope amidst the difficulties brought about by the

pandemic?

The “I ask my classmates for activities and lessons for every synchronous

meeting I miss” got a mean value of 3.34, which falls to the remark of “Agree” and

marks as highest Weighted Mean. It shows that consulting other classmates could help

them in making up their work in every synchronous meeting. On the other hand, the “I

borrow someone’s device when I don’t have one to use” marks as the Lowest

Weighted Mean which obtained a mean value of 2.72 under the “Agree” remark.

Although few

answered in borrowing device, it is still needed to borrow from someone in order

to catch up a lesson.

From this Table, the overall results in Coping Up gained a grand mean of

3.08 which categorizes in the remark of “Agree”.

Conclusions

Based on the foregoing findings, the following conclusions are derived:

1. What are the difficulties faced by the students in online classes

during a pandemic?

It is concluded that the students still face difficulties of Online learning,

specifically when it comes to having access to some devices like laptops or tablets.

2. Does the pandemic affect the Academic performance of the

students?

This simply shows that the student's academic performance is affected by the

pandemic that unlike the face-to-face classes they actively participate in the given

activities that are being guided by the instructor personally.

3. How did they cope amidst the difficulties brought by the

pandemic?

It is concluded that students exert the effort for them to cope with their studies

despite the difficulties they face. They still find ways like asking their classmates for

activities and lessons that they miss.

Recommendations

Researchers wish to make some recommendations, which, if taken into

consideration, might bring some positive changes to the current approach.

1. What are the difficulties faced by the students in online classes

during a pandemic?

Given the data, the students are recommended to keep the instructor updated about

their internet situation and device problem for them to know how to help their

students.

To avoid distractions, students are recommended to have a good working

environment where background noise and distractions such as video games and social

media are avoided.

Students are recommended to research using different learning devices needed for

the online class.

2. Does the pandemic affect the Academic performance of the

students?

Given the data, the students are highly recommended to reach out to their

instructor if they struggle on their subject, especially when having group activities for

them to cope up and improve their academic performance.

Students are recommended to a lot more time doing their activities and attending

synchronous class because it can cause a failure grade.

Students are highly recommended to do advanced reading and review their

handouts especially when they have an upcoming quiz, it is for them to pass the

subject.

3. How did they cope amidst the difficulties brought by the

pandemic?

Given the data, the students are recommended to exert more effort attending

synchronous class for them to avoid cramming and breakdowns while doing activities.

Students are recommended to be more responsible when they miss activities or

lessons.

Students also recommended to be not shy asking if they can borrow a device for

the online class.
