E. Review of the Previous Lesson
In our previous lesson, you have learned some of the literary elements namely; theme, tone,
rhyme, rhythm, and sensory images. Tone conveys the feelings or attitudes of the writer and it has
to do with our topic for this afternoon.

2. Motivation
The class will be listening to a video presentation that can be seen or watch in Youtube
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-AUW72Rs1o). It’s a conversation among three friends
through a telephone call. Afterwards, the class will be performing the same script used by the
characters.

3. Presentation of the Lesson

The students will be asked by the teacher if what they have noticed about the short video
shown to them. They will discover the topic on how the characters throw the lines to each other.
The teacher will now introduce the topic “INTONATION”.

4. Lesson Proper
The students can now identify the definition of Intonation presented by the teacher.
• Intonation- It is the rise and fall of voice. The natural rising and falling of human speech or the
introduction to a chant are examples of intonation.

There are two types (2) types of intonation.

 Rising Intonation- describes how the voice rises at the end of the sentence.
Rising intonation is common in Yes-No questions.
Example: I hear the health center is expanding. So, is that the new doctor?
Are you thirsty?
 Falling Intonation- describes how the voice falls on the final stressed syllable of
a phrase or a group of words. A falling intonation is very common in wh-
questions.
Example: What time does the film finish?
Where’s the nearest post-office?
( We also use falling intonation when we say something definite, or when we want to be very clear
about something: )
Example: I think we are completely lost.
Ok, here’s the magazine you wanted.

5.Enrichment Activity
The students will be given 5 minutes to make a short conversation with their seatmate (any
topic will do) observing the use of rising and falling intonation. They will be given another 2 minutes
for the presentation.

(Varied Examples)

6. Generalization
The teacher will ask the following questions:
What is intonation?
What are the two types of intonation and their function?
Why is it important to use proper intonation when talking with someone?

IV. EVALUATION:
Direction: Identify the following sentences if what type of intonation is being used. Write your
answer before the number.
