RAM
It can access data randomly at any
time in any order by CPU.
Contents can be changed or altered
as and when required.
It allows computer to read data
quickly to run applications
It allows reading and writing
It is volatile, contents are lost when
the device is powered off.
Larger than ROM, can be some
GBs
RAM chips can read data faster
than ROM
ROM
It generally stores handwired
instructions for the computer to start
initially.
It cannot be easily altered or
reprogrammed.
It stores the program required to
initially boot the computer or reboot
the computer.
It allows only reading.
It is non-volatile, contents are
retained even when the device is
powered off.
Smaller but large enough to hold
basic instructions , upto some MBs.
ROM is slower as compared to
RAM.
