Pointing Devices:
1. Mouse: It helps the user to control the position of the pointer on the
screen. There are 2 buttons:
a. Left: select items by double clicking
b. Right: brings up drop down menus.
c. Some have scroll button to move through the document.
Latest developments in mouse
a. Optical mouse: movement detected by reflected light rather
than the moving ball.
Adv: it has no moving parts so doesn’t pick up any dirt.
b. Cordless or wireless mouse: transmits the signal to a USB
wireless receiver plugged into the computer.
Uses:
1. Opening, closing and minimizing the software.
2. Grouping, moving and deleting the files.
3. Image editing.
4. Controlling the pointer, allow selection of menu, select an icon, scrolling
up/down, left/right.
Advantages:
1. Faster way to choose an option than keyboard.
2. Very quick way to navigate through applications.
3. Doesn’t need a large desk area.
Disadvantages:
1. Difficult for people with restricted hand/wrist movement.
2. Easy to damage.
3. Difficult to use if no flat surface.
Touch pad: pointing devices in laptops. Tapping it functions like left button
in mouse. There are also left and right buttons similar to the mouse below
the touch pad.
Advantages:
1. Same as mouse
2. More portable as it is built in.
Disadvantages:
1. Difficult for people with restricted hand/wrist movement.
2. More difficult than the use of mouse.
3. Difficult while using drag and drop function.
