Part II

Prefixes And Suffixes

Background Information for Learners:

Structural analysis is the process of breaking down words into their basic part to determine the word
meaning. It is a powerful vocabulary tool since knowledge of a few word can give you clues to the meanings of
a large number of words.

1. A prefix is a group of letters (or an affix) that is added before a word to change the meaning. Prefixes
modify the meaning of a word. They can make a word negative, show repetition, indicate position, or
give opinion. Some of the most common prefixes are dis-, in-, and un.

Example: Adding the prefix un- to the word kind makes the word unkind, meaning not kind.

2. A suffix is an affix that is added or attached at the end of a root or base word. Some suffixes added can
change the meaning of words. Others can signal the word’s part of speech or indicate verb tense. Some
common suffixes are –ed, -s/-es, -ing, and –ly.

Examples:
Maria shoveled the soil. (Adding the suffix -ed creates the past tense of the verb shovel.)
Maria is shoveling the soil. (The –ing suffix makes the verb in its present tense.)

3. Root word - the basic meaningful parts of a word.
