WHAT I HAVE LEARNED
1. A fact is a statement that can be proven true or false. An opinion is an expression of a
person’s feeling that cannot be proven. Opinions can be based on facts or emotions and
sometimes they are meant to deliberately mislead others. Therefore, it is important to
be aware of the author’s purpose and choice of language. Sometimes, the author lets
the facts speak for themselves.
2. Reliable information must come from dependable sources. According to UGA libraries, a
reliable source will provide a “through, well-reasoned theory, argument, etc. based on
strong evidence.” Widely credible source include: scholarly, peer-reviewed articles and
books.
3. By verifying the information you already know against the information found in the
source. Look also for disclaimers as to the accuracy of the content. You may also want to
double check the information against a source that you already know is trustworthy.
4. A decision must be made. The facts have been assembled, and the arguments and for
the against the options is spelled out, but no clear evidence supports any particular one.
