PLANS
Date: Tuesday, March 1, 2016, 9:05 – 9:35am
Grade Level: 1st
Subject Area: Reading

Objectives:
 Student will recall and verbalize level 6 sight words and phrases with automaticity
and accuracy
 Student will recognize words with short “o” vowel sounds when reading
 Student will fluently read various passages with short “o” words

Materials:
 Leveled sight words chart
 Read Naturally
 Short “o” passages
 Phonics for reading

Procedure:
Sight words –
1. Take out sight word lists
2. Have student point to each words and recall word quickly
3. Strategies if struggling: Repeat word at least 4x, spell word, refer back to
word, “what is the word?”

Read naturally –
(Student has been working on short vowel sounds in CVC words. This week student is working
on passages with short o’s specifically.)
4. Read passage, “The Dock”
5. Write a list of short o words while student is reading
6. Have student read and recall word list after she is done reading
7. Ask student to think of two words that can be added to the list, have student write
words

Short o passages –
8. Take out short o passages, “Dot’s Job” and “Bob the Frog”
9. Student read passages read passages
10. Highlight short o words afterwards and review

Phonics for reading (if time) –


11. Continue working on short vowel lesson, emphasizing short vowel sounds

Assessment:
 Student is progressed monitored on a weekly basis. She is monitored on her
ability to read nonsense words using DIBSELs materials. These nonsense words
require her to recognize short vowel sounds, including short o words like in this
lesson.
 How our students understand information and the lesson are always observed by
the teacher and considered for upcoming and future lesson planning.
