lubricating or fuel oil purifier

Thursday 29rd June 2023

08:00 - On duty with 2/E, morning inspection of E/R carrier out found HFO Purifier
NO.2 with abnormal vibration, sound and discharge activity.

İnitial Action – To maintain safetly of the vessel HFO Purifier NO.1 was started.
HFO Purifier No.2 stopped and checked level of sludge tank by sounding to ensure
no overflow. Also level of HFO service tank was checked and found to be
satisfactory.

Planning – Tool box meeting carried out where all hazards were discussed, correct
use of PPE was advised and our delegated tasks were given to each member of the
team.

PPE Requirements: Boiler suit, safety shoes, helmet, gloves, goggles.

Stop the Job Triggers: General alarm and other abnormal conditions.
The Biggest Risk to People: Slip, trip and fail. Personal injury.
Roles and Responsibilities: 2/E incharge and 3/AE, MM1/MM2, E/C’S, E/T are
assistance.

Maintenance – Before disassembling, checked that the machine is stopped

completely.
Checked the fan of the motor to determine whether the machine is stationary.
Checked the Multi-Monitor the LED flashed during revolution display and light.
Turned the power supply of the starter to ‘’OFF’’ to prevent the selfejector from
starting unexpectedly.
Closed the feed liquid valves inlet and outlet. Closed opening and sealing water
supply.Closed steam heater supply valves.

All tools were prepared by MM1 an Engine Cadets.( A list of required tools shows
add.page)
I assisted to remove sludge cover from frame. I removed socket cap screws,
connecting pipes and connecting tube with hook spanner.2/E removed cover nut,
hexagon nut fixing inlet pipe and loosen the socket set screw. We lifted up the sludge
cover and 2/E checked to bowl. The bowl was swing, it was not fixed.
For disassembling the Bowl, 2/E removed the disc nuts, heavy liquid
chamber, impeller, gravity disc.light liquid chamber and pulled out the light liquid
impeller and inlet pipe.
After that, 2/E removed the cap nut which is tightening the bowl on the vertical shaft.
Mounted the jack and tightened slowly until bowl is slighly raised and free. We lifted
up the bowl and putted the lifted bowl on the dismantling stand.
Disassembling the bowl: 2/E removed the bowl nut with handle. Removed disc clamp
plate. Removed the bowl hood ( upper bowl) by pulled the jack. Removed disc
group.Removed main cylinder by fixed the jack with socket cap screw and turned the
push bolt.
2/E also removed the pilot valve by using hexagon wrench.

MM1 started to clean bowl hood(upper bowl), bowl, main cylinder. MM2 started to
clean disc group, heavy liquid chamber, impeller, gravity disc.light liquid chamber and
light liquid impeller.

2/E checked up the vertical shaft. He decided the vertical shaft upper ball bearing has
been bad condition(broken).

Removing the Horizontal Shaft: I drained the lubricant from inside the gear case
while electrician was disconnecting to the power from motor. After that support the
motor with the chain block and ı removed the bolts and lifted the motor. I removed
the connecting tupes from gear pump. 2/E removed the gear pump from purifier body.
Removed the bearing housing from gear pump side and removed the friction pulley
from motor side. Removed the horizontal shaft.

Removing the Water-Suppliyng Device: I removed the operating water tube which is
mounted on the operating water disc. 2/E removed the bowl bushing jack by using the
jack, push bolt, handle and jack. I removed the socket cao screws on operating water
disc and 2/E placed the disassemble jack, push bolt on top of the vertical shaft.
Tightened handle to removed water suppling device.

Removing the Vertical Shaft: 2/E removed upper bearing cap and removed mist cover
and loosen the bolt and removed the bearing cover. Taken out the bearing cap, flat
spring and spacer as well. Pulled out the vertical shaft. Removed the upper bearing
housing, removed steel ball, lower spring bearing, spring seat, lower spring and
bearing housing.
E/T started to clean purifiers body and sludge cover. Me and other cadet carried to
vertical,horizontal,water-supply device, upper bearing housing and gear pump to the
workshop for inspection and assembly. I assisted to 2/E to disassembly and assembly
to the parts. Each parts were carefully contolled by 2/E and found what needs to be
changed has been identified. I prepared some parts to be replaced with new ones. All
parts to be replaced new one which is needs to changed. After maintenance and
inspection, we started to assembly to each parts. All parts has been clean and
assembly as manufacturer’s instructions. All connections has been connected and
prepared start to purifier. The purifier started and checked the purifier’s sound and
vibration. There was no abnormal condition sound and vibration when purifier
reached the specified speed. Discharge test was done and all clear.
Findings: 2/E found that the vertical shaft’s ball bearings were bad conditions. Upper
ball bearing was broken and lower ball bearing was bad conditions. This is the reason
for the swing-shaking. 2/E found that the oil seals, o rings, packing and gaskets and
bearing must be change. Also using correct lubricating oil and the specified oil level
should be. The purifier started and checked the purifier’s sound and vibration. There
was no abnormal condition sound and vibration when purifier reached the specified
speed.

Counclusion: I got to know how to dismantle, clean and reassemble a fuel oil
purifier and ı got to know each parts of the purifier and how works. I got to know
how to detect problem(s).
