Equipment ATS#3 EQUIPMENT POWER Recommendations • In the ATS configuration, the 'In Phase'
Nameplate option must be disabled to prevent issues
Information during load transfer. This is feasible because
they are configured for open transition,
meaning that at no point will both sources be
electrically coupled.

• It is possible to implement a rotation in the

Normal source in order to reduce the angle of
rotation between the sources of this ATS.
The proposed sequence is as follows:
o Current Sequence: Brown – Purple –
Yellow (BCA).
o Proposed Sequence: Yellow – Brown
– Purple (ABC).

Findings
An inspection and measurement were carried out
on the Equipment Branch ATS located in the
electrical room on the 2nd floor of UHT. It was found
that there is the same degree of electrical phase
displacement between the respective phases of the
utility and emergency power feeds. To confirm this,
a similar situation was discovered in the other ATS
units in the same electrical room (Life Safety and
Critical Branches).
The 90 electrical degrees displayed by ATS #3,
which prevented its operation, resulted from a
sequence displacement (BCA), creating a phase
shift of 120° between the respective phases
(maintaining the same direction of rotation), in
addition to -30° (The polarity of the angles varies
depending on the reference sequence taken)
caused by the phase shift between the feeds (utility
and emergency).
Through the phase rotation meter, it was
determined that both the Normal source and the
Emergency source are in a negative sequence (See
Picture #1 to #4). This implies that changing the
source will NOT affect the direction of rotation of the
loads connected to this Branch. Additionally, it was
verified with the Data Logger equipment that there
were no phasorial problems in both the Normal and
Emergency source (See Picture #5 and #6). Finally,
the sequence in the load (9th floor of the south
tower) in the parking garage elevator machine room
was checked, where it showed a positive sequence
(See Picture #7). This was achieved by making the

corresponding rotation at the ATS equipment

output.
Based on the above findings, it can be concluded
that this angular phase shift (approximately 26
electrical degrees) is present throughout the
installation. However, for practical purposes, it does
not pose a problem for people or equipment. This is
because the ATS units perform open transitions,
and therefore, perfect phase synchronization is not
required.

Notes The phase angle was measured in all ATS's of the building and the settings were checked to verify if the phase angle meter
function was enabled. It was found that the function was enabled with a setpoint of 10 degree.
