1.2. Main Technical Parameter

Vehicle loads employ for the load test are as follow:
4 Nos. of 20ton Heavy Truck = 80 tons

2. Bridge Load Test Summary

2.1 Purpose of Test

The purpose of "Load Test" is to verify the working performance of the bridge based on its behavior
against live loading.
The data such as displacement and stress intensity are calculated by structural analysis under the
required design load, and compared with a result collected by carrying out the load test at site. The result
is used for evaluating the bridge performance, technical condition and project quality comprehensively.

2.2 Test Items

The load test is carried out by means of applying the required load on bridge to measure the
structural response to evaluate whether the bridge load capacity satisfies the design requirement or not.
In order to satisfy the requirement of identifying the bridge load capacity, the test load case shall be
selected under principle of reflecting the most unfavorable stress condition.

2.3 Measuring Methods

There are basically two options to evaluate the soundness of the bridge after completion. The
options are;
1.To check the deflection of the bridge under the required load condition using survey instrument.
2.To check the stress intensity of the member under the required load condition using the strain
gauge attached the member surface.
Technique like structural analysis in recent year has been improved with the structure constructed, so
that its data has high reliability, and not only the supplied materials for the project like steel plate, HTB
and so on, but also a structure fabricated in shop are reliability because quality control is carried out very
well.
As the reason mentioned above, in this time, the deflection of the bridge members will be checked
under the design load condition. The results are confirmed as to whether the data measured at site is
lower than the analysis data.

2.4 Equipment and Instruments Needed for Static Load Test

The following table shows the necessary equipment and instruments for static load test.

(Symmetrical Position in transverse direction)
Case 2 Total load of 60tons(3x20tons) heavy trucks placed between A1 & A2.
(Unsymmetrical Position in transverse direction)

6. Test Condition

The deflection due to Load Test by the heavy truck loading should be smaller than the one which
was given by structural analysis.

We may have the following observations.

(1) The Bridge actually perform better than design analysis, in terms of the deflection an against
loading.
(2) The Bridge have sufficient redundancy, may be kept in their position against potential
unexpected, e.g. huge earthquake, overloaded trailers, strong storm attacking etc.
(3) The loading test result supports the design procedure of AASHTO (Standard Specifications for
Highway Bridges) and Japanese Bridge Design.
i.e. The design is made in such a manner that the heavy vehicle’s loading is supported by the steel
girder only
