JOB PROCEDURE FOR INITIAL UPLIFT LOAD TEST

DOCUMENT NO: AGIIL/QA-QC/EIL/B229/JP-010 REV. No. 0

The initial uplift load test is usually carried out to ensure the structural and
geotechnical soundness of the installed pile and to predict pullout capacity of the pile.

2. SCOPE:

The scope covers to execute 500 mm dia bored cast-in-situ pile at proposed
location. Installation of Bored Cast in-situ piling works involves various activities like
boring, liner installation, cage lowering, termite lowering, concrete etc. including co-
ordination of activities.
The intention of this document is to describe methodology for performing initial uplift
pile load tests on installed piles at the designated trial locations provided by ElL.
Pile Type Type I Type II
 Dia. of Pile, mm 500 500
 Design Load, MT 25 15
 Test Load, TL, MT 75 45
(3xDL)
3. SPECIFICATIONS / REFERENCE DOCUMENTS:

 Following documents in totality or in part shall form the reference documents:

 ElL's Specification/Guidelines (i.e. B229-000-81-41-SP-0014 Rev. 0 and 6-74-
0013 Rev. 03)
 Contract (Bid), AFC Drawings, etc.
 Relevant/Applicable IS Codes IS: 2911(part-4)

4. RESPONSIBILITY
Following are the responsibilities and reporting structure of personnel involved in the
of the procedure:

Resident Construction Manager-

• Shall be responsible for overall control of this procedure.

Site QA / QC In charge-
• Shall report to RCM at site
• Shall be responsible for overall implementation & control of this Procedure.
• Shall ensure proper implementation of this procedure.
• Shall checks and verifies the activities.

Site Safety Manager -

• Shall report to Resident Manager (Administratively) & Project HSE Manager (Technically)
• Manages the implementation of all safety requirements during survey operations.
• To verify and ensure that the communication system is working properly and that
emergency equipment is in place.

5. METHODOLOGY
a) Uplift Load Test Loading Arrangement
 The proposed initial uplift pile load test will be carried out using reaction girder system.
The reaction may be provided by blocks supporting the reaction girder. A hydraulic jack
shall be used for load application.
b) Preparation for Uplift Pile Load Tests: -

 Location of the test pile will be identified.

 Prior information will be given before commencement of testing.
 The pile head will be prepared in the following manner:
 The top surface of the loading platform is to be cleared and the testing must be done at
test level of pile.
 The pile is to be provided with a suitable connecting system that can be connected to the
reaction girder. Bolting / welding arrangement will be done to connect test pile
reinforcement to the reaction girder. The pile top will be levelled so that dial gauges can
be properly placed.

 Hydraulic jack system at the center of the reaction beam, vertically above the pile shall
be operated with pump. The reaction platform shall have same size and shape so that the
dial gauges are not damaged in the event of large uplift. Since the dial gauges shall be in
rewinding mode in such case, the gauges shall be set at a value close to the maximum.

c) Loading Procedure for Uplift Pile Load Tests:-

 Load will be applied by means of jacking the test pile against the reaction from two
supports on either side of pile.
 Pile will be tested to an ultimate test load (3 times design load) each incremental load
shall be 20% of design load to be applied on pile. Each loading increment will be
maintained until the rate-of displacement is equal to less than either 0.1 mm per 30 min
or 0.2mm per hour or till 2 hours whichever is earlier. Table 2 summarizes the load
increments for uplift pile load test.
 The loading and settlement/displacement monitoring records will be kept promptly
throughout the testing period and duly signed by the supervising authorities. A copy of
the same will be distributed to the supervising authorities, on request

 Two calibrated dial gauges of least count 0.01mm will be mounted and recorded
independently for lateral pile load test. For plotting purposes, the average of the recorded
readings of the dial gauges will be taken. Readings will be recorded at 2 min, 4 min,
8min,15 min, 30 min ,60 min at every 2 hrs until application of next load increment as per
IS2911 Part 4 - 2013. Sample format of equipment details record & settlement recording
sheet are attached.

F. Criteria for Acceptance:-

 The safe capacity of the pile from the pile load tests will be evaluated as per the
specifications given by the client (Doc. No.: B229-000-81-41-SP0014).
 The safe capacity o f pile from initial lateral pile load test is least of the following.
 Half of the final load for which the total deflection is 12 mm.

 50% of the final load at which the total settlement equals to 10% of the pile's diameter

6. SAFETY PRECAUTION:

All Safety precautions and safety requirements to be followed as per the EHS guide lines.
