LESSON Identify the different sense organs - LS2SC-BC-PSD-LE/AE-18

COMPETENCIES / Relate the structure of the sense organs to its functions - LS2SC-BC-
CODE PSD-LE/AE/JHS-19

OBJECTIVES
● Identify the five different sense organs: eyes, ears, nose, tongue,
and skin.

● Describe the functions of each sense organ based on their

exploration.

● Gain an appreciation for the importance of each sense organ in

their daily experiences.

ACTIVITIES "Sensational Sense Stations"

Materials:
1. Objects representing each sense (e.g., colored markers for vision,
small bell for hearing, scented cotton ball for smell, flavored
jellybean for taste, textured fabric for touch)
2. Blindfolds
3. Handouts with labeled diagrams of sense organs (optional)
Procedure:
Divide students into groups and each group will choose their leader.
Each member will be blindfolded except the leader. The leader of the
group will guide each blindfolded member to the table where he/she
will explore the sense organ object without seeing it. Every group will
be given 2 minutes to identify the objects the group who will get the
highest score will be the winner.

ANALYSIS Let the learners answer the questions.

1. What are the five sense organs?
2. What sense is associated with each sense organ?
3. How did you feel when you explored the sense organ objects
blindfolded?

ABSTRACTION The five senses and their functions:

1. Eyes (Vision):
 Function: The eyes allow us to see and interpret the
world around us. They detect light and convert it into
electrical signals that the brain processes as visual
information. We use our eyes to perceive colors, shapes,
and movement.
2. Ears (Hearing):
 Function: The ears enable us to hear and interpret
sounds. They capture sound waves from the environment,
which are then transformed into electrical signals that the
brain processes as auditory information. We use our ears
to hear different pitches, volumes, and directions of
sounds.
3. Nose (Smell):
 Function: The nose allows us to smell and identify
different scents. It detects molecules from substances in
the air, which bind to receptors in the nose's olfactory
cells. These signals are sent to the brain, which interprets
them as specific smells.
4. Tongue (Taste):
 Function: The tongue enables us to taste and distinguish
different flavors. Taste buds on the tongue's surface
detect various taste qualities, including sweet, sour, salty,
bitter, and umami. The brain processes these signals to
create our sense of taste.
5. Skin (Touch):
 Function: The skin is our body's largest sense organ and
allows us to perceive touch, pressure, temperature, and
pain. Nerve endings in the skin transmit these sensations
to the brain, helping us interact with our environment
and detect potential dangers.

APPLICATION

VALUING How can I keep my sense organs healthy?

You can keep your sense organs healthy by maintaining a balanced
and nutritious diet rich in vitamins and minerals that support their
functions, protecting your eyes from excessive screen time and harmful
UV rays with proper eyewear, regularly cleaning your ears to prevent
wax buildup and avoiding exposure to loud noises, keeping your nose
clean and hydrated, avoiding smoking to preserve your sense of smell,
practicing good oral hygiene to maintain your sense of taste, and
taking care of your skin through regular cleansing, moisturizing, and
protecting it from excessive sun exposure and harmful chemicals.
