Introduction

A preliminary coastal engineering report is conducted for assessing the problem of coastal
erosion at Tanjung Lipat Beach, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The coastal erosion is due to the bad
weather such as strong wave and high tide. Thus, this document presents the report for the
problem and sets out the approach and design concepts to be adopted for this problems.

Area of Interest

The area of interest is at Teluk Likas Beach, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Teluk Likas Beach also
known as Tanjung Lipat beach, located along the Likas Bay coast-way. It is stretching about 7
kilometres from the city port until the Tun Mustapha Tower. Along the bay, it has few
recreational activities such as jogging and cycling track as well as open spaces eateries such
as “Anjung Selera”. Figure 1-1 show the location of Teluk Likas Beach.

Scope of work

The objective of this report is primarily for the coastal erosion measures and also
rehabilitation work in Tanjung Lipat, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The scope of works for this
report will include the following:-

1. Survey Work
2. Soil Investigation Work
3. Civil and Structural Design
4. Construction of Sea Wall
5. Landscaping
6. Housekeeping
7. Safety and Environmental Measures during construction

Survey Work

The consultant will carry out survey work such as field survey to look closely at the affected
area. Figure 1-2 show the location of affected area along Tanjung Lipat beach.
Based on the survey, it is found that the affected area strecthing about 1.00 kilometer along
the beach. The cause of coastal erosion is due to the bad weather such as strong wave and
high tide.

Soil Investigation Works

The consultant will carry out necessary geotechnical investigation and analysis in order to
obtain the details of ground condition at specific location. It is required for the planning and
design of all engineering works. Thus, few boreholes (3 nos) are needed for this works and a
report analysis will be prepared.

Civil and Structural Design

Based on the computed analysis, the Consultant will carry out detailed design of structure to
prevent the corossion. Thus, new sea wall is proposed to mitigate coastal erosion and wave
run up. Figure 1-3 and Figure 1-4 shows the proposed location and design of sea wall
structure. Beach rehabilitation work is also needed in Tanjung Lipat :-

Landscaping
Aesthetic landscaping, recreational and beautification aspects shall be incorporated in all the
proposed works. Thus, landscaping works will be conducted such as replanting of existing
trees along the beach. Besides that, beach nourishment needed to make good of the beach and
to replace the sand that lost due to the erosion.

Housekeeping
Upon the completion of the construction works, the Consultant will perform housekeeping
works. Removal of construction debris is needed to keep the work areas neat, removing waste
materials and other hazards from work areas. The Consultant will also prepare a manual for
the operation and maintanence of the completed works.

Safety
During the construction works, the safety on the constrction area will be prioritized. It is to
avoid any problems to the workers and public safety near construction area. Thus, several
precaution are needed:-
1. The construction area must be fenced off to avoid any movement or access from
public near construction areas.
2. The workers must take into consideration on safety precaution during construction
works such as wearing Personal Protective Equipments (PPE), etc.
3. The Consultant will performing regular inspection to ensure that the safety and
construction activity are performed accordingly.

Cost Estimation
The total cost estimation for the coastal erosion measures and beach rehabilitation in Tanjung
Lipat Likas, Kota Kinabalu is RM 30 million. The total cost estimation is based on the work
breakdown as follows:
1. Survey Work

3. Civil and Structural Design
4. Construction of Sea Wall
5. Landscaping
6. Housekeeping
7. Safety and Environmental Measures during construction
