• Estimation is the method of obtaining an approximate value of a quantity or


numerical expression.
• Estimation is used in many practical situations where we do not need the ex-
act number.
• Words such as about, almost, over, approximately, at most and so on indi-
cate that the value is an estimate.
• Estimating is done by rounding off numbers to the nearest tens, hundreds,
thousands and so on.

Using Brackets:
Turn everything inside the brackets ( ) into a single number and then do the
operation outside.
70 × (52 + 65) = 70 × 117 = 8190
Expanding brackets:
15 × 102 = 15 × (100 + 2) = 15 × 100 + 15 × 2 = 1500 + 30 = 1530

Closure Property of whole numbers


Sum of any two whole numbers is a whole number. So whole numbers are closed under
addition.
Eg. 3 + 7 = 10 (whole number)
Multiplication of any two whole numbers is also a whole number. So whole numbers are

Whole numbers are not closed under subtraction and division.

Euclid was a Greek Mathematician who lived
around 330BC. He laid down the principles
of geometry through his book called Ele-

The tradition of making rangolis in India
