1. Language in Society is an international sociolinguistic journal that deals with
language and discourse as aspects of social life. Language is both a system of
communication between individuals and a social phenomenon. As stated by Dell
Hymes (1972), who argues that it is important to incorporate social and cultural
factors into linguistic descriptions, it is not enough for a child to have linguistic
competence; he must also learn when to be silent, when to speak, what to talk
about, and how to talk about it under different circumstances. Therefore, language
and society are interrelated.
2.

a. Linguistics is a science that examines or studies languages in general, which

include regional languages, Indonesian, and foreign languages. (general
linguistics)
b. Sociolinguistics is the study of language in relation to the use of that language
in society, which is studied in the field of interdisciplinary science.
c. Applied linguistics is another discipline related to linguistics that is an
application of one of the branches of macrolinguistics.

The difference is that if linguistics is related to language only, then

sociolinguistics is followed by society. Meanwhile, applied linguistics is also
followed by other disciplines.

3.

a. Being able to speak and construct sentences in a way that makes sense to other
people who speak the same language is an important skill for being able to
communicate verbally.
b. There are several factors that influence communication, including
relationships, values, background, perceptions, knowledge, and values.

4. Code mixing means when someone uses two or more languages. Insert several
words in different languages in one sentence.

For example :

- Thank you banar lah traktirannya! (English, Banjar, and Bahasa)

- Lool at me, jangan malihat kesana! (English, Banjar, and Bahasa)

- Gila lalu, I can’t go one with this anymore. (English, Banjar, and Bahasa)

- Daebak, it’s so amazing, aku mau beli ini. (Korea, English, and Bahasa)

5. Bilingualism means people speak two languages, mixing two languages in one
sentence.

For example:

- Terserah kamu, I don’t care.

- Honestly, aku beluma tau gimana caranya. So, maaf ya!
