The reading passage introduces the topic of deforestation. More specifically, the writer
develops three main reasons in favor of deforestation. The lecturer in the listening passage
disagrees with these three reasons. He believes that the writer avoids discussing about other
important factors that we should keep in mind when we are talking about deforestation.

In the first place, the authors says that thanks to deforestation we can create farms and
countryside produce enough food for huge populations. The author agrees with that idea that
nowadays we should produce huge amount of food, but he thinks that we should try to do it
through alternative ways which preserve ecosystems. He goes on to say that there are a lot of
alternative methods to produce food without destroy ecosystem. In this sense, he concludes
his first idea proposing that we should

In the second place, the author maintains through deforestation we can create a lot of
residential areas to live. These residential areas have a large number of economic benefits.
Again. the professor thinks that there are flaws in the writer argument. He sustains that our we
should not destroy our landscapes in benefit of our economy.

Another reason why the author defends deforestation is that it is a source of income.
Deforestation produces a lot of jobs in developed countries, as Brasil. The professor in the
listening passage is doubtful that this is accurate. He thinks that the kind of jobs produced by
deforestation in developed countries tend to be dangerous jobs with lower salaries. In this
sense, only a small group of businesspeople obtain really economic benefits from
deforestation.

To sum up, both the writer and the professor hold conflicting views about deforestation. It is
clear to see that they will have trouble finding a common ground on this issue.

No one can deny that the three proposed projects have negative and positive aspects. But, if I
were forced to choose, I would defend that the large donation should be invested in building a
public library. It is my firm belief that a public library can improve our community in several
senses and I will try to develop these ideas in the subsequent paragraphs.

In the first place, I think that our community is facing serious educational problems as a
consequence of the low investment in education. In this sense, if we want to find a solution to
these problems, an option can be building a public library. I must admit that my opinion on this
matter has been profoundly influenced by my own experience. You see, I am a teacher in a
secondary school which does not have a library because the administration do not have
enough money to buy books. So, for my students, it is really difficult to find books to read. In
this sense, if our government decides to build a public library, my students and all of the
students of our community will have free access to books. And that free access to books could
be a useful way to improve the education of our kids.

In the second place, I maintain that a public library is not only a place to read books but also it
could a place in which young people decide about their future with responsibility and maturity.
Drawing from my own experience, when I was young I used to live in a town with a big public
library. I used to go to the library all the afternoons after my school because it used to be a
really fun and proper place to study and discuss with my friends. Through these meetings for
studying with my friends, I discovered that I enjoyed teaching. Also, my best friend Natalia
discovered, thanks to the large number of geology books that the library used to have, that she
wanted to be a geologist. Nowadays, I am a great teacher and my friend Natalia is a famous
geology scientist. We always say that we decided about our future career in the public library
of our town. It is certainly clear to see why I defend that a public library is more than a public
space to read and rent books. A public library could have a lot of benefits for young people and
their futures.

In light of these two reasons, I strongly believe that the best investment that we can do with
the donation is to build a public library.
