La voix passive - English

1. Règle générale

BE + Participe passé (+ BY)

ATTENTION : BE = au temps de la voix active

Ex : The school was built by …

La voix passive est utilisé pour mettre de la formalité (pour mettre de la distance). Ex: pour le
TFE.

 Présent simple

Ex: I clean the kitchen every day —> the kitchen is cleaned every day

 Passé simple

Ex: I cleaned the kitchen every day —> The kitchen was cleaned every day

 Will

Ex : I will clean —> The kitchen will be cleaned

 Présent perfect

Ex : I have cleaned the kitchen —> The kitchen has been cleaned

 Présent continu

Ex : I’m cleaning the kitchen —> The kitchen is being cleaned

 Passé continu

Ex : I was cleaning the kitchen —> the kitchen was being cleaned

 INF

Clean —> be cleaned

 INF parfait

Have cleaned —> have been cleaned

 Gérondif (forme ING)

Cleaning —> being cleaned


2. Verbes à deux objets

Liste des verbes : give, ask, offer, pay, show, teach, tell

Objet qui a un CDV ou un CIV :


Ex : I was told to stop.
I was given a box of chocolates.
I was asked to shut the door
They have been offered to go on holiday for free
I will be paid to teach
We were shown a movie
I was taught to swim
I was told to bring food

‘Get’ peut remplacer ‘be’ quand qqch se passe


Plutô t oral et informel

Ex : There was a fight but nobody got hurt


Get invited, get offered, …

ATTENTION : il y a parfois ‘get + PP’ qui ne sont pas à la voix passive


Ex : get married, get divorced, get lost, get dressed, get changed

5. It is + PP that + S + V …
Someone/something is PP to + INF

Ça marche avec ces verbes : thought, said, alleged, believed, considered, expected, known,
reported, understood.

Ex : it is said that she is a mean girl -> she is said to be a mean girl
It is believed that the earth is flat -> the earth is believed to be flat

ATTENTION : to be supposed to
= to be said to
= ce qui était censé se passer mais c’est différent de la réalité (you were supposed to be
here early)
= ce qui n’est pas permis, pas conseillé (you’re not supposed to smoke here)

6. Have + Objet + PP

Ex : I have my kitchen painted
