WESTERN DESERT, EGYPT ELECTRICAL REQUlREMENTS
FOR PACKAGED E UIPMENT REV.3

I GENERAL

1.1 INTRODUCTION
1.1.1 PROJECT DESCRJPTION
Qasr is a large, normally pressured gas-condensate reservoir located in the Western desert of
Egypt approximately 525 km west of Cairo. The field is operated by Khalda Petroleum
COMPANY, a joint venture between Apache Corporation and Egyptian General Petroleum
COMPANY (EGPC).

Field production is initially handled at the Start of Line (SOL) Qasr Plant. After initial treatment
(cooling and water removal) the gas/condensate is exported to a combination of the Salam and
Tarek gas plants for further treatment. The Qasr gas and condensate currently free flows from the
wellheads through the Qasr Phase I and Phase il facilities and export pipelines to the SHAMS
manifold and Salam gas plant under reservoir pressure. As the reservoir pressure declines the peak
gas rate of 800 mmscfd will no longer be achievable.
The Qasr Compression Project (hereafter referred to as the "Project") is designed to improve
recovery as the reservoir production rate and pressure decline.
The Project scope comprises:
• Gas turbine driven single stage compressor sets
• Condensate export pumps
• Utility systems

1.1.2 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

1.1.2.1 Main Power Generation:
Power for the existing plant is currently provided by on site dual fuel turbine driven
generation (MPU's) QA-G-8001A/B, together with on-site emergency diesel generator sets.
Power from each of the main gas turbine generator sets is connected to an existing 11 KV
switchgear QA-L-8001 and thereafter sub distributed throughout the plant areas by means of
a number of switchboards located in substations.
The proposed additional electrical power distribution arrangement for the compression project
consists of an additional MPU QA-G-8001C located adjacent to the existing MPU's,
connected to the existing 11KV switchgear QA-L-8001.
The new MPU shall be relocated from existing facilities to Qasr to operate in conjunction
with the two existing MPU' S.

1.1.2.2 Emergency Power Generation:

Emergency power shall be provided by a diesel driven synchronous generator, rated to supply
the peak emergency load at 400V AC.
The package shall be capable of starting and running without the aid of any extemal power or
utilities assuming fully charged batteries and shall be capable of automatic start, load
acceptance and stop, initiated by local or remote signals.
The diesel driven emergency generation package shall be designed for unattended standby and
stand-alone operation.
The Emergency generator shall be located in a 'non-hazardous' area adjacent to the new LER.
1.1.2.3 Power Distribution Network:
The electrical system for Qasr Compression project shall be fed from existing MV switchgear
(QA-L-8004) at Phase II substation. The Qasr Compression electrical system comprises of
two LV power centers (QA-L-8013) & (QA-L-8014) both feeding a quantity of 4 Turbo
compressor MCC's (QA-L-8015-18) and 4 Plant auxiliary MCC's (QA-L-8019-22).
Each of the two power centers is fed by two new 1110.4KV 2.5MVA transformers (2 out of 3
configurations). An extension ofthree MV cubicles is needed in the existing MV switchgear
(QA-L-8004) at Phase II substation to be used with other existing spare cubicle to feed the 4
new 2.5MVA transformerso
