Activity 3: Properties of Organic Compound

I. Objectives:
1. Identify the properties of Organic Compound.
2. Describe the properties of Organic Compound with Inorganic Compound.

II. Materials:
Test Tube, Matchstick, Mortar and pestle, Cotton buds, timer, beaker, watch glass, sugar, ethyl alcohol,
vegetable oil, salt (NaCl)

III. Procedure:
A. Solubility in water
1. Pulverize a pinch of salt and put it in test tube.
2. Do the same procedure using sugar.
3. Pour an equal amount of water into the test tube containing substances.
4. Stir the mixture and record the dissolving time.
B. Solubility in oil
1. Pulverize a pinch of salt and put it in test tube.
2. Do the same procedure using sugar.
3. Pour an equal amount of oil into the test tube containing substances.
4. Stir the mixture and record the dissolving time.
C. Boiling point
1. Pour equal amount of oil and water in test tube.
2. Heat the substances and record the time.

D. Melting point
1. Put equal amount of pulverized pinch of salt and sugar and put it in separate test tube.
2. Heat both substances simultaneously. Observe which substances melt faster. Record the time when
the substances start to melt.
E. Flammability
1. Using a cotton bud, dip one side of the bud in the ethyl alcohol. Ignite using matches.
2. Do the same using water instead of alcohol. Observe and record your observations.
