2. What do you think is the relationship of those words in this lesson?
3. Why is it important to study puppets and to know how to create them?

ABSTRACTION
What is a Puppet?
According to the website of Twinkl, a puppet is a moveable model, animated by the
person who controls it using their hands or strings. Puppets usually take the form of a human,
mythical figure or an animal. They're used in entertainment, most commonly for storytelling.
There are different types of puppets, and they're operated or manipulated in different ways.
What is a puppeteer?
The person who manipulates a puppet is called a puppeteer. The puppeteer moves a hand,
arm, rod or string to animate the puppet itself. Depending on the type of puppet, the puppeteer
can control the arms, movement, eyes and mouth to create gestures and actions. Usually the
puppeteer manipulates the puppet's mouth in time with a spoken part. In this way puppets are
used in dramatic performance. This is a tradition stretching back to the Ancient Greeks in the 5th
century.

Overview of the Origin of Puppetry
Scholars debate where and when the first puppet came to be, but most agree that puppets
existed as early as 5th century BCE when puppetry was first recorded in Ancient Greece in the
writings of Herodotus. However, the first recorded puppet show doesn’t necessarily mean the
first puppet.
Current theories suggest that the roots of puppetry lie in ancient ritualistic dolls. These
dolls were often created in the image of humans or gods and manipulated like puppets—but the
people at the time didn’t see puppeteering as entertainment. We’re not sure how far back these
types of puppets date, but they’ve been found in Africa, Asia, India, New Zealand, North
America, and Mexico.
Puppets as we know them have also been found in Egyptian tombs that date as far back
as 2000 BCE—which means puppets have been around for at least 4000 years! Historians
suspect that Ancient Egypt or Ancient India may be the true birthplace of the first puppet (Puppet
Nerd, 2021).
Types of Puppets
1. Ventriloquist’s Puppets
A puppeteer creates the illusion of ventriloquism by giving the appearance that a puppet
is speaking. Ventriloquists used hard wooden puppets before, but now soft puppets are also
employed. A rod that extends from the back of the puppets' heads down their bodies is used to
control them. The puppeteer can control the puppet by inserting their hand through a hole in the
back of the figure, which is typically sat on the ventriloquist's knee. The movements may involve
the lower jaw moving, eyelids blinking, and eyebrows moving.
2. Marionettes
The puppets have a full body and are controlled from above by strings that are fastened to
various body parts. Because they are so complex, controlling them can be very challenging.
Marionettes can be moved around in a manner akin to walking and have a doll-like appearance.
The feet are frequently weighted to help the performance with gravity. Typically, two hands are
required to use them effectively.
3. Finger Puppets
These simple puppets are controlled using a single finger. This means you can have a cast
of characters on one hand. The only movement comes from the puppeteer's hand or finger
bending because they typically don't have any moving parts. The talking character's finger is
typically moved by the puppeteer.
4. Rod Puppets
These are an advanced form of the stick puppet. The rod puppet is held up by rods or
sticks, which are frequently fastened to the hands and body. Depending on the puppet, the
puppeteer may be above or below the puppet, manipulating the body and hands with the rods.
5. Hand Puppets
The hand puppet, which is worn over the hand like a glove, is also referred to as a glove
puppet, first puppet, and Guignol (after a character in a well-known French puppet show).
Typically, a hand can control the puppet's head, arms, and body thanks to the hollow inside. The
puppeteer can move it by inserting a finger into each arm and two fingers into the neck. The
puppeteer can manage two puppets at once because it can only be controlled by one hand.

6, Shadow Puppets
In order to project shadow puppets onto a wall or a piece of material, strong lighting and
two-dimensional figures are typically used. They frequently take the shape of stick puppets that
have been contoured to create silhouettes.
7. Stick Puppets
Stick puppets are a great way to begin making puppets because they are made from an
image that is cut out and adhered to a stick. This straightforward craft project has a ton of
learning potential.
Different Types of Puppet Manipulation
Before we explore the different types of puppets, it’s worth noting the three positions
from which a puppet can be manipulated/operated. This is because the positioning varies for
different types of puppets:
Below: The puppeteer operates the puppet from above their head. Rod puppets are controlled in
this way.
Above: The puppeteer controls the puppets from over the top of them such as with marionettes.
Behind or Beside: The puppeteer positions themselves at the same height as the puppet. This is
common with Bunraku-style puppets.
Ten Benefits of Using Puppets in the Classroom According to Viaro Global School (2022)
Puppets can act as role models for behaviour and emotional regulation, and they can
boost communication skills through structured and playful teacher-led opportunities. Puppets
offer to our children an opportunity for role-playing that allows them to explore new
personalities, and ideas and develop their imagination. The following are the benefits of using
puppets in the classroom:
1. Emotional Development
Puppets can teach children about their emotions. Children can interact with the puppets as
they share their ability to be happy, sad, angry, funny or scared.
2. Listening Skills
Puppets are great tutors. The puppet on your hand can encourage the child to listen to it
as it gives instructions or tells a story. Puppets can help children to learn, stories, rhymes and
songs as they imitate the puppet too.
3. Motor Skills
There are several motor skills that children can improve through playing with puppets.
The fine movement required to wear a puppet helps with dexterity, and using fingers to
manipulate the puppet improves fine motor coordination. Puppets help with eye-hand
coordination as the puppet is made to walk and move in different directions. All these skills
improve balance and directionality as the child has great fun playing with the puppet.
4. Social Skills
Puppets can increase children’s communication and social skills by providing structured
opportunities to interact. Children can also practice these skills by using puppets to interact with
other children.

5. Music Appreciation
Puppets can make music and creative movement more interesting and can teach children
the words and movements to new songs.
6. Encouraging Creativity
Children can use puppets to come up with stories, scenarios, and creative ways to solve
problems and also children can tap into their imaginations to create their own stories.
7. Guidance
Children can learn appropriate behaviors by watching the puppet’s example, or the
puppet can introduce and explain classroom rules.
8. Concentration
Using puppets has increased the children’s concentration, allowing us to provide more
learning opportunities as they engage for longer periods of times.
9. Language Development
Children love to have ‘conversations’ with a puppet. Each verbal interaction with their
puppet will encourage language development. Children who are generally shy really benefit from
the opportunity to let the puppet be their voice. It is also possible to have a conversation between
two puppets. Wearing a puppet on each hand enables to have a dialogue going on between two
puppet characters.
10. Educates in Values
The traditional stories, represented with puppets, talked about values such as tolerance,
generosity, or kindness. They usually convey a positive message to children.

APPLICATION
Direction: Using different art materials (stick, sock, yarn, etc.), you are tasked to create a puppet
and compose a short storyline depicting the current state of education in the Philippines. This is a
group activity. Thus, it requires collaboration. You will be guided with the rubric below for the
creation of puppet and the content of your presentation.
Criteria Percentage
Creativity 30%
The puppet shows the art of creativity and maximizes the use of
elements.
Content 50%
The puppet show depicts the context that is being asked and made
the presentation worthwhile.
Overall Impact 20%
The content shows clear impact to its audience and made the
presentation remarkable.
