ASSIGNMENT IN UNDERSTANDING SELF

1. WHY DOES SOCRATES WANT DAN TO GET OUT OF HIS MIND? NOTE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE
MIND AND THE EGO. ALSO, NOTE THAT THE PRESENT MOMENT IS THE ONE PLACE WHERE THE EGO
CANNOT EXIST.

Socrates wants Dan to get out of his mind because he wants Dan to live his life. He wants to be
the best of everything and to everyone. Socrates wants Dan to live in a simple way of life to experience
simple things. As Socrates said “Slow down you might taste something”.

2. WHAT IS SOCRATES TRYING TO TEACH DAN WHEN HE TAKES HIM TO THE TOP OF THE GYM TO
OBSERVE HIS COACH AND TEAMMATES?

Socrates trying to help Dan not to become heedless because Dan doesn’t want other’s opinion
nor care other’s feeling. Socrates wants Dan to know what others think about him. When Socrates takes
Dan to the top of the gym to observe his coach and teammates he was trying to teach him not all
individual have the same traits, some are unique. He realizes that his coach and teammates hide
themselves of what they truly are because they doesn’t want to be embarrassed. He also sees that his
team are not living in that moment because their minds are somewhere else.

3. WHAT IS SOCRATES TRYING TO TEACH DAN BY MAKING HIM SCRUB TOILETS AND CLEAN THE SERVICE
STATION?

Socrates teach Dan to be self-discipline and self-determination in his training. He was trying to
teach Dan to mediate his action whether even his cleaning toilets and service station. He wants him to
strive his life and accept his fate. Teach Dan to help others by letting go of his ego. His ego is taking him
to the wrong way of life. Whenever you have received, you must give back also.

4. WHAT LESSON IS SOCRATES TRYING TO TEACH DAN ABOUT ADDICTIONS, PRIDE, AND ATTACHMENT
IN THE BAR SCENE?

Socrates teaching Dan to minimize his habit in drinking. To teach him to be conscious of his
choices and responsible for his action. Dan doesn’t know his purpose in life all he know is pride of
himself and became addict in drinking. Socrates wants him to enjoy every moment of his life and just
enjoy of what his doing and never expect in return.

5. WHAT IS THE HOLD-UP SCENE DESIGNED TO TEACH DAN TO LET GO OF?

Socrates want him to let go his ego to trust who he is and think what is more important to him.
Teach him not to engage himself on material things. Teach Dan all the thing in this world did not make
him who he was, only his ego makes him believe.

6. WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SOCRATES TAKING DAN OUT ON A HIKE IN NATURE?

He wants Dan to do unexpected things and enjoy life at the moment in journey up to the
mountains. Teach him that life is paradox, mystery, make the happiness as a journey not a destination,
and change yourself because no one stays the same.
7. WHAT LESSON THAT YOU LEARNED FROM THE MOVIE.

I’ve learned that we can’t be better than anyone, and less than anything. There is no kinds of life
that can make you on top, everyone needs respect and be valued. We must treat every person the
same. I know that all of us has an advantage but also all of us has disadvantage. Life doesn’t based on,
wealth, knowledge and what you have accomplish in life. Don’t think that we are different because all of
us has a purpose in life that make us meaningful. Always remember that God created man equally.
