PERFORMANCE TASK IN “UNDERSTANDING THE SELF”

Name: ANAMAE P. PATRIMONIO Year and Section: BSA1-A

Watch the movie “Peaceful Warrior” and answer the following questions:

1. Why does Socrates want Dan to get out of his mind? Note the connection between the
mind and the ego. Also, note that the present moment is the one place where the ego
cannot exist.
Socrates wants Dan to get out of his mind because; Dan has been living in
fear and his ego then, takes control of his mind and actions. But if he gets
out of his mind, there will be no more room for fear. As what Socrates said,
“You can live a whole lifetime without ever being awake.” There will only be
time and space, and what he does at the moment; thus, making him aware
of what is there at the present.
2. What is Socrates trying to teach Dan when he takes him to the top of the gym to observe
his coach and teammates?
Socrates showed Dan of what would happen if we let our ego take control
of us; telling us that we are not enough and worthless. “We don’t have to
be better than someone else to be good at something”, with that being
said, we must focus on what we do and love it. For there is no such thing
as better; there is only us having the time of our life.
3. What is Socrates trying to teach Dan by making him scrub toilets and clean the service
station?
“When you become a warrior, you learn to meditate in every action”,
Socrates told Dan to teach him that in life, we must learn to find happiness
in everything that we do. If we are able to find joy in small things, imagine
the happiness we have in doing the things that we love. We don’t have to
look for the reason behind it we just have to do it as if everything’s the first
time.
4. What lesson is Socrates trying to teach Dan about addictions, pride, and attachment in
the bar scene?
“The gold is a craving. You don’t surrender your dreams, Dan. You
surrender the one thing you never have and you never will, “control”.
Accept that you don’t control what will happen to you.” These words are
powerful for Dan, and even for me. Addiction, pride and attachment will not
take us anywhere. It will only make us dependent to it, disabling us to move
forward and be happy if it won’t be in our possession.
5. What is the hold-up scene designed to teach Dan to let go of?
This scene is to teach Dan that he must let go of the material things and his
attachments to it; by not letting his ego take control of his feelings and
emotions. Material things are not as important as our life. To save our lives
we must let go of our ego.
6. What is the significance of Socrates taking Dan out on a hike in nature?
Socrates wants Dan to realize that “the journey’s what brings us happiness
not the destination.” We set goals in life, but we should always remember
the objectives; for objectives are what make a goal.
7. What lesson that you learned from the movie.
I learned a lot of things in this movie but one thing that I surely kept in my
mind is that “A warrior acts; only a fool reacts.” This statement depicts this
moment whilst typing these words to let myself know that I can be a
warrior, not with swords, but a peaceful one who takes action before
making unnecessary reactions. It is also my favourite lesson in this movie
because it encouraged me more to do the given tasks before due. I want to
be a warrior; I am a warrior, therefore I act because I am not a fool and I
don’t want to be fool.
